I TOUCHED
THE MOON
Who goes all the way to
Orlando and doesn’t set
foot in a theme park? This
guy. Not because my stomach is even more
temperamental than iTunes, but because
there were space rockets to be gawped
at instead. So I moseyed on down to the
Kennedy Space Center for an awesome
look at mankind’s endeavours in the great
beyond, and even got to slap my index
finger on a tiny piece of moon rock. That
beats the screaming children of Disney
World and Universal Studios all day long.

I USED GOOGLE
TO MAKE FIVE
MEMES A MINUTE
Time was, making a decent
meme meant firing up Paint
and doodling some dodgy shapes. Now
Google is here to help. I Initially dismissed
AutoDraw as just another canvas app, but
oh how wrong I was. As I started to sketch
out my hilarious vision of a sheep riding in
a pickup truck, Google began suggesting
appropriate images including – lo! – both a
sheep and a pickup truck. How did it know?
Someone murmured something about AI,
but I don’t think we’ll ever know.

I TECHED MYSELF
OUT OF A HIKE
The map geeks at Ordnance
Survey have released
another feature for their
OS Maps app. With a Premium subscription
(£24/year) Aerial 3D lets you swoop over
Britain’s glorious crags and oxbows as if
you were a circling eagle, hunting for rabbits.
You can even overlay your proposed hiking
or biking route, if you have it as a .gpx file...
at which point I realised just how high it
was, and decided to leave it for another
weekend. I’m guessing that’s not quite
what they had in mind.

I KISSED MY
DSLR GOODBYE
Mo’ money, mo’ problems...
or in my case mo’ camera
gear to lug around on
holiday, mo’ of an arse than it’s worth.
And so, I embraced the ‘keep it simple,
stupid’ principle. My pocketable three-piece
photography setup was a ‘classic’ Ricoh
GRD2 28mm fixed-lens compact, an
SD card reader and an iPhone with the
Lightroom app for RAW editing. I really
enjoyed the simplicity of my setup, and
without a DSLR swinging around my belly
I avoided looking like a dad at Disney.
