Synoptic situation
An area of low pressure and
associated fronts and a trough
will spread eastwards across
Britain and Ireland leading to an
unsettled day in many places.
An occluded front will push
rain across southeastern areas
during the morning. A trough
in the west will help to develop
scattered showers across
western and eventually central
parts of Britain later.

O
rchids are proving to be
a good indicator of
Britain’s warming
climate, and exotic wild
foreign orchids are
beginning to appear here.
The tongue orchid lives up to its
name with a striking pinky-red
tongue-shaped petal sticking out
from the bloom. It is quite common
in the Mediterranean but has now
established itself in England, with
the attractive Serapias lingua found
in Essex a few years ago. Even more
dramatic was the discovery last June
of the small-flowered tongue orchid,
Serapias parviflora, on the roof
garden of a tower block in London,
as well as on grassland in Suffolk
and at a location in Cornwall.
Orchids from Europe are good at
taking advantage of England’s
changing climate because their tiny
seeds are so light they easily blow
across the Channel.
Another foreign orchid to set up
home here is Himantoglossum
robertianum, which has a
magnificent tall flower spike up to
1m high. It typically grows in central
and southern Europe, but was
recently discovered on a grassy
slope near Didcot in Oxfordshire. It
already has a close cousin in
southern England called the lizard
orchid, named after its spectacular
lizard-shaped petal that flutters in
the breeze with a reptilian wiggle.
The lizard orchid, Himantoglossum
hircinum, is well established on the
Royal St George golf course at
Sandwich in Kent but was so rare
that in the 1970s and early 1980s it
had to be guarded against orchid
collectors. Since then, it has thrived
and spread as far as Somerset.
Perhaps the most spectacular
boom has been the bee orchid,
Ophrys apifera, a glamorous flower
that imitates the shape, yellow
markings and furry texture of a bee.
In the 1960s it was largely confined
to grassland in southern and
southeastern England. In recent
years its numbers have increased,
and they have appeared beside roads
and railways and even on waste
ground. It has also found the climate
warm enough to spread as far north
as Glasgow and Edinburgh.
