Yesterday’s racing results

Ciccone lands his
third Giro stage win
Cycling Giulio Ciccone went solo
in the finale to win the 16th stage
of the Giro d’Italia, a 177-km
mountain trek between Rivarolo
Canavese and Cogne, as Richard
Carapaz retained the overall lead.
Ciccone attacked from a group
of breakaway riders 4km into the
final climb and never looked
back. The 27-year-old Italian had
plenty of time to celebrate the
third Giro stage win of his career
before crossing the line 1min
31sec ahead of Santiago Buitrago,
of Colombia.
Carapaz survived an early scare
when he was involved in a pile-up
but he was unscathed and helped
back into the peloton by his
Ineos-Grenadiers team-mates. It
was then a comfortable ride for
the 2019 champion, who retained
a nine-second overall lead from
the Australian Jai Hindley.

Pujara recalled by India

Cricket Cheteshwar Pujara has
been recalled to the India squad
for July’s rescheduled fifth Test
against England at Edgbaston.
Pujara, 34, was dropped for the
home series with Sri Lanka in
March but he has been in
outstanding form for Sussex this
season, scoring four centuries in
eight innings to average 120 in
the County Championship.
The fifth Test, called off last
September because of a Covid
outbreak in the India camp, will
be staged at Edgbaston from July
1-5. India lead the series 2-1.

Titmus breaks record

Swimming The double Olympic
gold-medallist Ariarne Titmus
has broken the women’s 400m
freestyle world record at the
Australian championships.
Titmus, who won gold in the
200m and 400m freestyle in
Tokyo, finished in 3min 56.40sec
in the final at the South
Australian Aquatic Centre to
improve on Katie Ledecky’s
previous mark of 3.56:46 set at
the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Hapless Pant is backed

Cricket Coach Ricky Ponting said
Rishabh Pant would remain his
first choice as Delhi Capitals
captain despite blunders from the
wicketkeeper-batsman that cost
them a place in the IPL play-offs.
Pant dropped a catch and failed
to review a caught-behind off
Mumbai Indians’ Tim David, who
went on smash a match-winning,
11-ball 34 in a five-wicket win.

Barker in the

swing with

new balls

Geoffrey Dean

After Somerset had been bowled out
for 69 in only 25 overs to lose to Hamp-
shire by ten wickets on Saturday, their
tormentor-in-chief, Keith Barker,
praised the better quality of the second
batch of Dukes balls that were released
early for this seventh round of County
Championship matches. The much-
maligned first batch “obviously had
something wrong with them” accord-
ing to James Anderson, who com-
plained they were “not swinging and
were going out of shape, and soft, with-
in ten overs”.
Barker, the 35-year-old all-rounder,
took six for 27 in 13 overs on Saturday,
getting his wickets largely on the back
of swing. He said it was the first innings
this season when Hampshire had not
asked to get the ball changed.
Counties were given the option last
week of continuing with the first batch,
or switching to the second ahead of
schedule. “We used the second batch
and there was definitely more swing in
both innings for us,” Barker said. “Al-
though there was swing, the wicket
offered a lot through the whole game.”
It was the 35-year-old left-armer’s
third five-wicket haul of a season, in
which he has taken 27 wickets at only 16
apiece. His form has helped lift Hamp-
shire into second place, three points
behind the first-division leaders Surrey,
raising hopes of a first championship
title for 49 years.
Somerset’s fourth defeat of the
season, and their second against
Hampshire who thrashed them by an
innings at Southampton last month,
underlined the fragility of their batting.
“If you bat like that and don’t front up as
a group you are not going to win any
games,” Tom Abell, their captain, said.
“There was a little bit more swing
with this batch of balls but we are not
going to make excuses for ourselves.”
Barker revealed that Hampshire had
been surprised by Abell’s decision to bat
first on a green top. “We would definite-
ly have put them in had we won the
toss,” he said.
Abell praised the “quality” Hamp-
shire attack, which looks the best in the
country. “They’re always at you, always
asking questions,” he said. “We fronted
up in the first innings and showed a bit
of character to fight through and get to
a competitive total [211] on that wicket.
“The lack of fight and character in
the second innings — that’s what hurts
the most. There have been games
where we have folded too quickly. We
have to be more consistent.”

as Crawley finds much-needed form

shire, batting through the final day to
save the match.
Kent were involved in yet another
high-scoring draw, on a flat pitch at
Wantage Road against Northampton-
shire, and are still searching for their
first win of the season. There was good
news for England, though, as Zak Craw-
ley returned to form after a torrid start
to the season, making 84 in the second
innings as Kent made 170 for one,
having scored 519 in their first innings.
In Division Two, Nottinghamshire’s
ten-wicket win over Derbyshire at
Trent Bridge was not enough to knock
Middlesex off top slot. The openers,

Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater, shared
and unbroken partnership of 167 to see
their side home within a single session
— albeit one extended by almost 20
minutes to avoid the players having to
return after lunch. It was Derbyshire’s
first defeat since Mickey Arthur took
over as head coach amid something of
a bowling injury crisis — Suranga
Lakmal and Anuj Dal were both ruled
out of the match and a groin injury
restricted Luis Reece to just nine overs.
Paul Nixon, Leicestershire’s head
coach, said his team’s hammering by
Worcestershire by an innings and 259
runs at Worcester was the “lowest

point” of his time in charge of the
county. Having bowled Leicestershire
out for 148 on the first day, the home
team piled on 577 for six declared,
thanks to a double century by Azhar Ali
and Jack Haynes’s third century in as
many weeks — the 21-year-old now has
526 runs at an average of 65.75.
In the tour match at Hove there were
two wickets apiece for Matt Henry,
Jacob Duffy, Colin de Grandhomme
and Ajaz Patel as Sussex were bowled
out for 247. The New Zealand openers,
Tom Latham and Will Young, who both
retired in the first innings after making
fifties, are 20 not out overnight.
