GAME IN
NUMBERS
Title turnaround
Manchester City are the first team in
top-flight history who — as it turned
out — needed to win on the last day
of the season to clinch the title and
did so having trailed by two goals in
that match: they beat Aston Villa 3-2
after having been 2-0 down. They are
also the first team for 4½ years to
move ahead in a Premier League
game by scoring a third goal in only
six minutes.
On the last day of the
1975-76 season Liverpool came from
behind with a three-goal burst that
started in the 76th minute to win the
title with a 3-1 win over
Wolverhampton Wanderers;
yesterday, on the final day,
Liverpool beat Wolves 3-1 but were
beaten to the title by a team who
started a three-goal burst in the
76th minute.
Doubles all round
City became the first team to record
a top-flight double over as many as
14 opponents in one season, having
beaten Villa 2-1 away in December
— the previous record since 1888
had been 13.
City’s goal difference advantage of
134 over Norwich City (plus-73 to
minus-61) was the greatest in one
season: the six-goal swing
yesterday, when Norwich lost 5-0 to
Tottenham Hotspur, took the gap
past the previous largest of 131
between Sunderland (plus-57) and
Darwen (minus-74) in 1891-92.
Norwich are the first team in
top-flight history whose second
highest scorer managed only two
goals (top two: Teemu Pukki 11,
Josh Sargent two); 12 teams have had
a second highest scorer on three
goals.
City to the four
Pep Guardiola’s team are the first
top-flight club to play eight
consecutive games in all
competitions with at least four goals
(for and against combined) since
Sheffield Wednesday in 1997 and the
first to end the season that way since
Preston North End in 1900-01. Their
league games this season have
averaged 60 minutes and
54 seconds of ball-in-play time,
almost four minutes more than
those of any other team
(Tottenham are next).
Liverpool v
Wolves
Only three times
have a team lost
fewer than three
league games in
one season and
not won the
top-division
title —
Liverpool in
2008-09, 2018-19 and
this season. Jürgen
Klopp’s team are the
first since
Manchester
United in 2012-13
to have no
penalty awarded
against them in one Premier League
season. Had Liverpool (drew 3-3) and
Arsenal (lost 2-0) instead won away
to newly promoted Brentford this
season they would have won the title
and reached the Champions League
respectively.
Goal glut
For the 21st of the past 22
seasons there were more goals-
per-game on the final day (3.9)
than previously in that
campaign (2.8). The 27 second-
half goals were the most on one
Premier League day since May
8, 1993. This season will have
featured the highest top-
flight attendances: the
average will be around
39,500 (when the
remaining figures are
registered), beating
39,313 in 2019-20
(excluding the period
when no fans could
attend because of
Covid) and 38,776 in
1948-49.
Born to score
Liverpool’s Mohamed
Salah and Tottenham Hotspur’s Son
Heung-min finished as the Premier
League’s joint top scorers on 23 goals

  • and they were born 23 days apart
(Salah first, in the summer of 1992:
    June 15 to July 8). Since 1962
    Manchester United have won 15
league titles to Tottenham’s none yet
in that period Spurs have had the top
flight’s leading scorer (or joint top
scorer) 12 times to United’s six.
Tottenham’s 5-0 win over Norwich at
Carrow Road was the 35th Premier
League away win by at least a three-
goal margin this term, four more
than in any other top-flight season
(next most was 31 in 1946-47).
Norwich are the first to record four
    consecutive seasons where they
finished either bottom of the top
flight or top of the second tier.

Newcastle on the up

Newcastle’s victory over Burnley
makes them the first team with 11
more wins in the second half of a
top-flight season (12) than in the first
half (one) – next most is Chelsea’s
ten in 1967-68 (14 wins in second
half, four in first half). On points per
game, assuming three points for a
win throughout, this was Manchester
United’s worst season in their past 32
top-division campaigns and Everton’s
worst in their 123-year top-flight
history.

Norwich had to rely
heavily on Pukki’s goals
