NOTES

BY ANDY KOSTKA

baltimore — As lightning flashed and thunder
rolled in the Baltimore Orioles’ series finale with the
Ta mpa Bay Rays, there was an equally resounding
sound added to the mix — a crack of the bat.
As if on cue, right after Austin Hays’s two-out,
two-run single to tie the game at 6 in t he ninth
inning, the skies above Camden Yards opened and
began pelting the field with rain. Play resumed after
51 minutes and promptly headed to extra innings,
and Baltimore wound up winning, 7-6, via Rougned
Odor’s fielder’s choice that scored Adley Rutschman
from third.
It was all part of a most unusual Sunday at the
park. Starting pitcher Spenser Watkins was hit by a
line drive and left the game in the first inning, and
soon after, Isaac Paredes blasted a three-run homer
off Joey Krehbiel, putting Ta mpa Bay ahead 4-0.
But Krehbiel recovered, completing a career-high
three innings in relief. That helped cover for a
bullpen that required five more arms to close out the
game — giving up just two additional runs.
Ramón Urías and Odor drove in runs in the third
inning, and Ryan Mountcastle launched a solo shot
in the fifth. Two errors helped plate one more run in
the seventh.
Then came the ninth, when Mountcastle led off
with a single and Urías worked a one-out walk. Both
were pinch-run for, and Hays soon scored both with
his knock, setting up for the game-winning fielder’s
choice — the Orioles’ third walk-off in four days and
their first series win against the Rays since a
three-game sweep July 31 to Aug. 2, 2020.
