Mr.McManuswas bornin Ohio,spenthis
boyhoodin rural Indianaandbecamea
journalistaftergraduationfromIndianaUni-
versity.Hewas an Indiananewspaper,radio
and televisionreporterand broadcasterand
lateraWhite Housecorrespondent,whose
assignmentscarriedhimtomorethan 50
nationsaroundthe world.He retiredfrom
CBS Newsin 1988,butcontinuedtowork
as afreelancewriterand videoproducer.
He also taughtcommunicationsat Georgia
StateUniversity.
Mr.McManus,agraduateof Concannon
HighSchool,wasacombatveteranofthe
KoreanWar, servingaboardthe destroyer
USS THE SULLIVANS(DD-537).His remains
will be inurnedat ArlingtonNationalCeme-
terywithmilitaryhonors.
In briefdeparturesfromhis craft, he served
as directorof the AeronauticsCommission
ofIndianaandpersonalpilotforGovernor
MatthewE. Welsh. Later,hewas special
assistantto IndianaCongressmanLee H.
Hamilton,on CapitolHill in Washington,DC.
In1968,asassistanttoPierreSalinger,he
waschiefof pressadvancefor RobertF.
Kennedy,travellingwiththe senatorin
his nationalcampaignfor the Democratic
presidentialnominationin Indiana,Oregon,
Californiaand NewYork. Eventually,his du-
ties includedfuneral arrangementsfor the
senatorin NewYork City,the funeral train
toWashington,DCandburialinArlington
NationalCemetery.
Beginningin 1954,Mr.McManuswas are-
porterandbroadcasterfor WBOWradio
and laterWTHIradio and televisionin Terre
Haute.Helater wrotefor the Bloomington
(Indiana)Star-Courier,reportedfor the India-
napolisTimes,aScripps-Howardnewspaper
and for WFBM(WRTV)radio and television,
thenaTime-LifeBroadcaststationin Indi-
anapolis.In1968,he becameWhiteHouse
correspondentfor GroupW, Westinghouse
Broadcastingand from 1976 onwardwas a
CBS Newscorrespondent.
Asapoliticalreporter,Mr.McManuscov-
eredRichardM. Nixon’swinningcampaign
for the presidency,joinedthe presidenton
all domesticand foreigntravelsand was
aboardUSSHORNETfortheSouthPacific
splashdownof the Apollo11 astronauts
aftertheirhistoricvoyageto the moon.He
coveredtwo nucleararmsreductiontalksin
Moscowand PresidentNixon’svisit to the
PeoplesRepublicof Chinain 1972.He also
reportedthe WatergateScandalthat led to
thepresident’sresignationinAugust,1974.

bornin Lennoxtown,Scotland,his mother
in Ohio.Mr. McManuswas twicemarried;to
HelenLee Siverlyof Marshall,Illinoisand La-
vonneB.Meister,ofIndianapolis,withwhom
he had five daughters.Both marriagesend-
ed in divorce.

McManusofFlorida;daughtersAllison(Mi-

deceased)Burrisof Georgia;Lynn (Andrew)

Mrs.ArthuryneJ. Welch-Taylor,age 105,
diedThursday,May 12 at HowardCounty
CommunityHospitalwhereshe had been
admittedtwo daysearlier.Membersof her
immediatefamilyat her bedsidesaid that
she was not in pain and expiredpeacefully.
Duringher final monthsthe familymatriarch
was able to enjoyanumberof well-attend-
ed celebrations,includingthe mostrecent
Thanksgiving,her March11 birthday,and
Mother’sDay on May 8.
The familylovinglydemursregardingher
requestto be rememberedsolelyas one
whostroveto be agood mother;although,
raisingfourcollege-educatedchildrenon
her own afterthe suddendeathof her hus-
bandin 1949certainlyqualifiesas asignal
achievement.Mrs.Taylor’smany otherac-
complishments,however,cannotgo unher-
alded.
The fifth of six childrenbornto Rev.Rich-
ard T. and J. AugustaAndrewsof Houston,
Mrs.Taylor (Mom,Grandma,Coco),like most
of her siblings,was aconstantin the field
of educationbecauseof its importancein
enhancingthe prospectsof youngAfrican
Americans.She firstpreparedherselffor
this lifelongquest–earningher B.A. degree
cumlaudein homeeconomicsfromPrairie
ViewA&MUniversity(Texas).Blessedwith
bothbeautyand brains,Mrs.Taylor,despite
beingan underclassmen,waselectedas
the first Ms.Prairie View.For two yearsafter
graduatingin 1937,she workedas aHome
Demonstrationagentin San Augustine,the
oldestcountyin Texas,wherehorseswere
still tied up in the townsquare,she likedto
reminisce.She relocatedto LangstonUni-
versityto workas administrativeassistant
to the presidentof the historicallyBlack
college(or university)(HBCU)and whereshe
met and marriedfellowuniversityemployee
James A. Welch. Theywouldlaterholdpo-
sitionsat two otherHBCUs:he as business
managerat JacksonStateUniversity(Jack-
son,MS)and TennesseeStateUniversity
(Nashville),and she as assistantdirectorof
the TSU PlacementBureau.
Six monthspregnantwithher fourthchild
whenJamesand astudentwerekilledin
atragic bus accidentuponreturninghome
fromafund-raisingcollegejazz banden-
gagementin Alabama,Mrs.Taylorthen
strengthenedher resolveto providefor
her family.She obtainedaM.S.degreein
ElementaryEducationfromTSUin 1953
andwasawardedascholarshiptopursue
an Ed.S.degreein ElementarySupervision
at GeorgePeabodyCollege,now merged
withVanderbiltUniversityin Nashville.Af-
ter graduationshe acceptedthe position
as assistantprofessorof Educationat TSU.
Furtherstudiesweredonein LanguageArts
atNorthwesternUniversityinEvanston,IL,
and she was avisitingprofessorof Educa-
tion at HBCUsTexas SouthernUniversityin
Houstonand her almamaterPrairieView
A&MUniversity.
In 1969,Mrs.Taylormovedto Washington,
DC,tobecomeassociateprofessorof Gen-
eral Studiesat WashingtonTechnicalInsti-
tute (nowUniversityof DC). That sameyear
she marriedHenryL. Taylor,Ph.D., thena
civil rightscoordinatorwiththe Rural Elec-
trificationAdministrationin the Department
of Agriculture.Dr. Taylor died in 1987.
An avid traveler,her adventuresincreased
markedlyafterretiringfromthe National
EducationalAssociationin 1986,whereshe
had workedas aresearchspecialistsince
1970.She managedto visit everycontinent
exceptAntarctica,oftenaccompaniedby
her husband,or sister,the late CarolJoy
Hobson-Smith,or her daughter.
Everundaunted,Mrs.Taylor experienced
and sharedso muchof America’sgreatest
challengesand moments–ratification of
women’svotingrights;World WarI,Spanish
Flu; the GreatDepression;World WarII, Ko-
rean War; Civil RightsMovement;assassina-
tionsof the Kennedys,MalcolmX, King;the
VietnamWar; and both electionsofAmer-
ica’sfirstBlackpresident,Barack Obama.
Knownto possessinfinitepatienceand a
generosityof spiritand personalresources,
Mrs.Taylorsoughtto supportand further
the livesof the less fortunatethroughher
lifelongdedicationto tithingwithinwhatev-
er churchcommunityshe was associatedas
well as workingto upliftand nourishothers
through,for example,her church’sfood dis-
tributionprogram.
She is survivedby daughter,MelvadeenBai-
ley of Columbia,MD; stepdaughter,Wynelle
Welch of NewYork; sons,JamesofDurham,
NC,Reginaldof Falls Church,VA,and Robert
WelchofAustin,TX;granddaughterMyka
Sparrowof Dallas,TX; grandsonsLawrence
Baileyand Dr.Babu Welch of Dallas,TX, Sule
Welch of Atlanta,GA, and ReginaldJ. Welch
of Austin,TX. She also had six great-grand-
children,and stepchildrenHenryL. Taylor,
Jr.ofBuffalo,NY, DianaTolliverof Bowie,
MD,and RuthMatlockof Glenarden,MD,
and anumberof stepgrandchildrenand
great-grandchildren.

was alovingmarriage,completewith all the

plorethe region.
Robert&Monicalivedmostof theirlivesin
Annandale,VA, and wheretheywerefaith-
ful parishionersof St. Michael’sCatholic
Church.Monicaand Bob sent theirchildren
to the parishschool,and the wholeZimmer-
manfamilymadelife-longfriendsthrough
the Church.Summertripsat CampMariain
Leonardtown,MD,consistedof goodwhole-
someoutdooractivitiesfor the kids and a
raucous,healthypartyatmospherefor the
adults.Thankfullythe goodSistersof Charity
wereasleepwhilethe laughter,card playing,
and carousingwenton throughthe night.
Travel was aconstantthroughoutMonica’s
life.Inretirement,Monicaand Bob traveled
throughoutthe UnitedStateson boththe
East and West Coasts,aswell as to Europe,
Canadaand the MiddleEast.Although,the
slowpaceof nearbyWilliamsburg,VA,was
Monica’sfavoritevacationdestination.
NothinggaveMonicamoredelightthan time
spentwithher threegrandchildrenthrough
simpleSundaydinners,aswell as big cel-
ebratoryfamilyholidays,with the annual
EasterEgg Huntone of the majorhighlights.
Monica,like Bob developedAlzheimer’slat-
er in theirlife and theybothled theirfinal
yearswith fortitudeand grace.

Sociology,and BostonUniversityin 1955
withan MS in SocialWork, afterwhichshe
workedas apsychiatricsocialworker.Ro-
bertamarriedLesliePolk in 1958,whowas
aDiplomatfor the Departmentof State.
Theywerestationedin Jeddah,SaudiAra-
bia wherePatriciaMaePolk was born;two
yearslater,while stationedin Damascus
Syria,RobertManleyPolkwasborn.The
Polk ‘s traveledthe world,living in Belgium
and Francebeforesettlingin SilverSpring,
MD in 1971.Robertaworkedat Family and
ChildServicesuntilretirementas Program
Directorof Daycarein 1995.She became
grannynannyto her grandchildrenuntil her
enrollmentat Wesley TheologicalSeminary
at the age of 70 due to her unceasingquest
for knowledge.She continuedto travel,tak-
ing her last overseastrip to Paris at the age
of 87. Robertaremainedactiveas aBennett
Belleand as adevotedmemberof Friends
of the Chapelat HowardUniversity.She con-
tinuedto makenew friendsthroughouther
life.She is survivedby her daughterDr.Patri-
cia Polk Jett, six grandchildren,aplethoraof
niecesand nephewsand countlessfriends
and lovedones.

May 20, 1941to Edward“Sokey”and Matil-
da “Tillie”Sokolowski.
Bothof his parentsare deceasedas is his
sole brother,Edward,and sister-in-law,Terry
Sokolowski.
BrotherRoberthas had along-timeattach-
mentto the Catholicfaithand in 1960he
enteredthe MaristSocietyin Washington,
DC to becomeaMaristBrother.Heattend-
ed Novitiatefrom1962-1963in Watch Hill,
RI. Uponreturningto the MaristSeminary
in 1963,he was appointedto theirGener-
al Housein Rome,Italy wherehe remained
until 1968.Whilein Rome,hewitnessedthe
SecondVaticanCouncilfirst handand with
otherBrothersattendedto 12 Bishopsuntil
the closingof the Council.BrotherRobert
also carriedout manydutiesat the Marist’s
beautifulGeneral Housein Romeincluding
maintainingthe extensivegardensand land-
scaping.
BrotherRobertreturnedto the U.S. in 1968
and spentseveral yearsat MaristCollegein
Washington,DC.Hewas transferredin1984
to the parishof St. FrancisXavierinBruns-
wick,Georgiawherehe servedas Pastoral
Assistant.BrotherRobertwas subsequent-
ly transferredto the CatholicCathedral in
Cleveland,OH and thento St. Matthews
Cathedral in Washington,DC.In1989,the
decisionwas madeby the MaristSocietyto
transferBrotherRobertto the Cathedral of
St. Johnthe Baptistin Savannahwherehe
remaineduntilhis retirementin 2010,serv-
ing as Masterof Ceremoniesand Pastoral
Assistantin additionto managingthe Cathe-
dral’sweddingrehearsalsand weddings,as
wellas assistingin developingthe Cathe-
dral’sdocentprogram, whichcontinuesto
provideawelcomingpresencefor all who
comeinto the Cathedral.
BrotherRobertalso becamewell knownfor
his workon the floral decorationsin the Ca-
thedral throughoutthe year,particularlyat
Christmastimewhenhe was responsiblefor
the erectionof the poinsettiatree as well
as the installationof acrèche,which utilized
the entirechapelof the BlessedVirginMary.
Bothof theseadditionsbecameiconsof the
ChristmastraditioninSavannahandnow
draw thousandsof visitorseachyear.

E. G. Stassinopouloswas bornin Germany;
his grandfatherJohannvon Pascalideshad
emigratedto GermanyfromConstantinople
in the 19th century.“Stass” wasastudent at
Berlin’sAcademischeGymnasiumin 1935,
whenHitlerJugendfootsoldiersassaulted
him and his brother,and left themseriously
injured.The familyfled to Greeceto escape
Nazism;afterthe Axis occupationof Greece
in 1941,Stassservedas amemberof the
GreekEKKAresistancemovement. Stass
emigratedto the US in 1954and changed
his professionfromlaw to physics.In1961,
he joinedNASA,and,as the Head of God-
dardSFC’sRadiationPhysicsOffice,worked
on researchin magnetosphericphysics,
geomagnetism, solar-terrestrial relation-
ships,natural and man-maderadiationex-
posure,radiation effectson biologicaland
electronicsystemsand components,and
radiationenvironmentmodeling.Stass was
the principalinvestigatorin multipleoriginal
researchfor NASA,and he was the author
or co-authorof hundredsof papersand
articlesin peer-reviewedscientificjournals
and booksin the field of spaceradiation.He
was awardedapatentin 2008for his min-
iaturizedradiationspectrometer,currently
on the NASADSCOVRsatellite.At95years
of age,heco-authoredaNASATechnical
Report“Forty-Year ‘Drift’andChangeof
the SouthAtlanticAnomaly(SAA)”,making
him one of the oldestpublishingresearch
scientistsin NASA’s history.Stass and his
late wifeEffieweretogetherfor 67 years.
Theyare survivedby theirdaughterYolanda
and son-in-lawAnastassiosChassiakos,and
theirthreegrandchildren,Anastasia,George
(Tenzing),and Alexander.Funeral services
