STEIN Janet died peacefully at
Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, on
11th May 2022. Much-loved and loving
mother to Barbara, Penelope and Dorothy,
and grandmother to Andrew, David,
Robert, Claire, Lisa, Katherine, Thomas and
Cassie. Funeral to be held at St John’s
Church, Hills Road, Cambridge, on
Friday 27th May at 2pm. Family flowers

TOWNSEND Cecilia died peacefully on
16th May 2022. The much-loved mother of
her only child, Jo-Ann Shore. A remarkable
woman with the administrative skills of a
Whitehall mandarin. Formerly of the Queen
Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, a
local authority social worker and an SSAFA
social worker, working in Germany and
Hong Kong. We laughed, cried, fought and
loved each other fiercely, and I will miss
her immeasurably. Her cremation will be
held at Preston Crematorium on 10th June
2022 at 11.30am. No flowers, please.
WILLIAMSON Elijah (Bill) OBE, former
atomic energy counsellor in the British
Embassy, Tokyo. Died peacefully on
10th May 2022, in the West Cumberland
Hospital, Whitehaven, in his 99th year. A
much-loved husband of the late Renie,
father, grandfather and great-grandfather
(Poppa) who will be dearly missed. Funeral
service will take place at the Eden Valley
Crematorium on 6th June 2022 at 2pm.

PICKERING
Murray died peacefully on 11th May
2022, aged 87, after a short illness.
Murray spent his early years in
Christchurch, New Zealand. At
university he first studied economics
at Canterbury University and then
went on to study law at Victoria
University in Wellington. He began
his career working as an economist
for the New Zealand Treasury, but
his sights were set on the
opportunities he saw on the other
side of the world. Accepting the
prestigious Gordon Watson
scholarship, he moved to England
with his then wife, Vivienne, to study
for his Master’s degree at the
London School of Economics. He was
called to the Bar in 1963, beginning
his commercial practice at 3 Essex
Court. The chambers later relocated
to 20 Essex Street. He was appointed
Queen’s Counsel in 1985 and his
practice covered commercial law,
banking, insurance and reinsurance
inter alia, latterly focusing on
international commercial arbitration.
His former colleagues remember his
towering intellect and kindness. He
was elected a barrister governing
bencher of the Inner Temple in 1992.
There will be a family cremation and
a service of thanksgiving for
Murray’s life at the Temple Church at
a future date. Murray is survived by
his children Rebecca, Rachel, David
and Ruth, his partner, Maureen, and
eight grandchildren. His first
great-grandchild is due this autumn.

FALCONER James Keith Ross, died
peacefully at home on 17th May 2022, aged


  1. Hugely admired and respected by a
    great many friends and colleagues for
    whom his generosity, sense of fun and
    optimistic spirit were an inspiration.
    Raconteur, country sportsman and lover of
    whisky and claret, Keith was one of a kind.
    An adoring husband, brother, father and
    grandfather. A private family funeral will be
    held. Memorial details to follow.
    HOPKINSON Felicity (née Bradley) died
    suddenly on 17th May 2022, aged 73.
    Beloved wife of Bryn, mother to Suzie,
    Tiggy, Lucy, Josie and Christopher and
    grandmother to Arabella, Amber, Freya,
    Thomas, Oliver, Esme, Winnie, Raffy, Arthur,
    Otto, Caspar, River, Remy and Maggie, who
    miss her already. Private cremation.

18th May 2022, aged 92, in the early
hours of the morning. He has gone to
join his beloved.
