120 chapter 2

Recipe:
1 Coral bell (any variety of Heuchera will do, but try
to choose one with attractive coloration)
1 red-stemmed lady fern (Athyrium angustum forma
rubellum ‘Lady in Red’ or another upright fern)
1 soft, grass-like plant: Try prairie blue-eye grass
(Sisyrinchium campestre), a low-growing sedge
such as Bowles’ golden sedge (Carex elata ‘Aurea’)
or broad-leaf sedge (Carex siderosticha ‘Variegata’)

Design tip: The flowers of some coral bell varieties are
more ornamental than others. If you’re not impressed
with the flower spikes, don’t hesitate to cut them off
at the base of the plant. The primary focus of this
container is foliage texture and color, so removing the
flowers won’t hurt the design.

Recipe:
2 yellow creeping stonecrop (Sedum rupestre
‘Angelina’)
3 purple salvias (Salvia splendens)
3 apricot Profusion zinnias (Zinnia hybrid ‘Profusion
Apricot’)
3 Bonfire® begonias (Begonia boliviensis ‘Bonfire’)
1 orange FlameThrower™ coleus (Solenostemon
scutellarioides ‘FlameThrower Habanero’)

Design tip: Though this container is designed in a
flat-backed style, the same collection could also be
arranged in thriller-filler-spiller fashion.

This simple design is for shade gardeners who like
to grow perennials in their containers so they can
add them to the garden at the end of the growing
season. The mixture of foliage textures in this planting
creates a soft and interesting appearance. The upright
structure and lacy nature of the fern provide a vertical
element to oset the rounded leaves of the coral bell.
The soft grass-like plant tumbling over the pot’s edge
adds yet another textural element.

This hot-colored container design is ideal for bright,
sunny spots. To really make this color combo shine,
chose a brightly colored container.
