More Container
Concepts
The possibilities are nearly limitless when it
comes to growing in containers, and there’s
no doubt that your own creativity is the best
muse, but a little extra inspiration never hurts.
Sometimes, the best container designs are an
extension of a bright idea someone else had first,
and there’s nothing wrong with borrowing a little
inspiration from another gardener who shares
your style or whose style you can easily modify to
fit your own. In fact, garden tours, public gardens,
magazines, websites, and books like this one
are the perfect places to get your creative juices
flowing; they can help you craft some pretty
wonderful stuff.
In this chapter, I’ll introduce ten additional
container gardening concepts easily tailored
to many different gardening styles. All of these
concepts are scalable and readily adapted to
whatever plants you’d like to grow, provided
they’re the right physical size for the container.
TABLETOP PLANTERS
Greening up your outdoor living space can be
as effortless as having a living centerpiece. Use
pint-sized tabletop planters to adorn side tables,
beverage carts, bistro tables, outdoor bars, and
other small surfaces on your patio, deck, or
balcony. Or group three or four petite tabletop
planters together on a larger dining table or
outdoor sofa table. A single large container filled
with edible or flowering plants also makes a great
centerpiece for a bigger outdoor dining table. For
good design, select a round container for a round
table and an oblong container for an oval or
rectangular table.
Public container plantings, such as this pot on a
sidewalk in Quebec City, Canada, that uses cherry
tomatoes as a “spiller,” are great places to find
inspiring ideas.
Though these pots of basil will have to be moved
when diners arrive, the ability to toss a few fresh basil
leaves into their salads makes the eort well worth it.
