VERTICAL AND
HANGING PLANTERS
Vertical gardens and hanging planters are a great
way to grow up or down, instead of out. They save
space, cover unused, empty walls, and add more
growing area to almost any site. And a strategically
placed, free-standing vertical planter can increase
privacy, reduce noise, and provide shade for seating
areas—not to mention its good looks.
There are hundreds of ways to grow vertically,
each with its own merits and faults. Vertical
planters are easily made from recycled or
repurposed items such as wood pallets, plastic
water jugs, picture frames, rain gutters, old
buckets, hanging shoe organizers, plastic or metal
pipes, and scrap lumber, to name just a few.
There are also scores of commercially made
vertical planting systems, including free-standing
planter “walls,” wheeled, mobile gardens with
multiple tiers, and fabric pouches to hang on a
wall, fence, or other vertical structure.
Hanging planters are another effective way
to save space and garner more room for your
plants to grow. Hanging baskets and other types
of hanging wall planters can be used to grow
food or ornamentals, fill unused vertical space,
or add a splash of color to an area otherwise
devoid of interest.
There are many ways to build a vertical planter out of a
repurposed household item. This planter is made from
pouches of chicken wire lined with moss and mounted in
an old picture frame.
A moss-lined wall planter flanks the front door and
welcomes visitors with a combination of shade-loving
foliage plants, including rex begonias, ivy, golden
arrowhead vine (Syngonium podophyllum ‘Maria
Allusion’), and a staghorn fern (Platycerium spp.).

Vertical planters such as this herb-filled pallet garden,
are a great way to save space and add more growing
area to almost any site.
Empty birdcages make great hanging planters. This
one hosts a small potted vine and hangs next to a
frequently used walkway.
This wall planter at the Naples Botanic Garden in Florida is made from fabric pouches installed on a wood and wire
frame. Filled with tropicals, herbs, and flowering annuals, a vertical planter like this one can increase privacy, reduce
noise, and shade nearby seating areas.
