SUCCULENT CONTAINERS
In addition to the cement bin succulent planter
featured in Chapter 1, there are dozens of other
great ways to utilize these versatile plants in
your container garden. Succulents are plants
with thick, water-filled foliage. They’re drought
and heat tolerant, and they require very little
in regards to their maintenance and watering
needs. Succulents can survive extended periods
without water; they’re a great choice for forgetful
container gardeners!
Here are a handful of creative ways to use
succulents in container plantings.

Use a single bold succulent, like a blue or variegated
agave, in a featured specimen planting for a striking
addition to your container garden.

Succulents are excellent choices for vertical
plantings, living walls, and living roofs. They’re easy to
propagate, and they don’t mind living in tight quarters.
Plant succulents in containers of any size, shape, or
color to make a beautiful display of interesting textures
and forms.

Pots of succulents placed on sunny window sills won’t
su er from neglect like some other plants do. Hang a
wire shelving unit under an exterior window and place
potted succulents on it instead of installing a window
box planter.

Make a succulent topiary by lining the inside of a wire
frame with moss, filling it with succulent potting mix,
and planting an assortment of mixed succulents.

Place bowls or small pots of succulents on top of just
about any flat space to add texture and color to an
otherwise blank slate.

Top a birdhouse, mailbox, or chicken coop with a roof
of succulents.
