STEP 5 The remaining leftover wood from Board #9 can
now be used to make the vertical supports (I). Use the
circular saw to rip two strips, each^7 ⁄ 8 in. wide, from the
leftover board. Then, crosscut the strips to make four
pieces at 6 in. long and four pieces at 11 in. long.

STEP 6 Begin building the side panels by attaching
straightedges to your work table with four hand screw
clamps. Use a speed square to make sure the corner is
at a perfect 90° angle. Assemble the short side panels
first by laying two legs (A) to the outside and two sides
(B) in between them, making sure they sit squarely
in the corner of your straight edges. If your cedar
is rough-cut on one side and smooth on the other,
make sure the side you want facing the outside of your
planter box is facing down. Scribe a line across all four
boards, 9 in. down from their top edges. This line will
mark the edge of the support strip.

STEP 7 Position one short support (F) so its top edge
is on the marked line. Set a second short support so
its top edge is flush with the top edges of the side
boards. Position a third short support so its bottom
edge is flush with the bottom of the side boards. Drill
pilot holes and attach the short supports to the side
boards with two 1^1 ⁄ 4 in. exterior decking screws drilled
into each side board.

STEP 8 Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to build the second short
side panel, again being careful to keep either the
smooth or rough side of the boards to the exterior.
Then build two long side panels using the same
process, except with four side boards between the legs.
Also, the support strips on these long sides will be set
in from the edges of the legs by^3 ⁄ 4 in. on each side. This
will allow the short side panels to be overlapped by the
long side panels.

STEP 9 Cut and position the vertical supports (I) flush
with the edges of the first side panel. The 6-in.-long
vertical supports go between the top and the middle
supports, and the 11-in.-long verticals go between the
middle and the bottom supports. For the top vertical
supports, make sure there is a gap of 1^1 ⁄ 2 in. above
the middle support (see inset). This gap will allow
the pot shelf boards to be inserted once the box is
assembled. Drill pilot holes and attach the vertical
supports to the leg boards, using 1^1 ⁄ 4 -in. deck screws
spaced about 1^1 ⁄ 2 in. apart. Now drill horizontal pilot
holes through the adjoining face of each vertical
support, spaced in between the vertical screws.
These pilot holes will be used to secure the short side
panels to the long side panels.

STEP 10 Stand one short side panel and one long side
panel upright and join the corner together, using a
framing square to make sure the angle is a perfect 90°.
Then, join the two panels together by driving decking
screws through the pilot holes on the vertical supports
and into the leg boards on the long side panel.
