STEP 11 Attach the third and fourth sides in the same
fashion, again using the framing square to make sure
the angles are 90°.

STEP 12 Once the box is assembled, attach a bottom
brace (H) to the inside bottom of each of the four
corners by drilling pilot holes then driving deck screws
down through the brace and into the bottom supports.

STEP 13 Insert the four pot shelf pieces (C), resting the
ends on the middle supports on each short side panel.
If necessary, you can cut them down slightly to fit.

STEP 14 To attach the top frame, lay the two long top
frame pieces (E) and the two short top frame pieces
(D) in place on the top edge of the box. Secure them
with two long bar clamps. Attach the four pieces to the
top of the planting box with 6d finishing nails. Sand
any rough edges, and, if you’d like, you can finish the
box with paint, stain, or sealant prior to planting. If left
unfinished, cedar weathers to a silvery gray.

MATERIALS NEEDED
1 bag perlite
1 bale peat moss
1 bag Portland cement

pure Portland cement,
commonly available
in 47- and 94-pound
bags).
Non-stick cooking spray
Water

TOOLS NEEDED
1-gallon bucket
Mixing tub or
wheelbarrow
Mold or form (see Step 1
for options)
Plastic painter’s tarp
Drywall saw
Drill

(^1) ⁄ 2 -in. masonry bit
Dust mask or respirator
Thick rubber gloves
Eye protection
While concrete pots are gorgeous, they’re also incredibly heavy. Hypertufa
is an excellent alternative to concrete, since it’s far lighter but just as
weather-proof. Once you see how beautiful these planters are, making
them becomes addictive. One word of caution about this project: mixing
hypertufa is very messy! Spread protective plastic sheeting over your
work surface, and wear old clothes to do the mixing. You’ll also want to
wear thick rubber gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and a pair of safety
goggles. As you mix the hypertufa, small particles of the ingredients
become airborne; it’s important to protect your eyes and lungs.
