At the time when the lion population was believed to be saturated ( after about
2005), the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks received numerous re-
ports of lions eating domestic cat and dog food that had been placed outside doors or
on patio decks; and lions were observed near homes, presumably looking for food. Lions
also were found in garages or outbuildings (potentially hunting mice) or barns (in
close proximity to livestock). Mountain lions were documented killing llamas, sheep,
and goats, and there were reports (although most were unverified) of attacks on cattle
and horses. In fact, over 20% of necropsied lion carcasses showed evidence of con-
sumption of domestic species ( table 6.4). In response to these kills and reports, the
