Joined together

These butterflies are mating.

They will stay like this, out

of danger in the bushes, for

several hours. Afterwards,

the male flies away

and the female

lays her eggs.

Dancing in the sky

Keep a lookout for butterflies or

moths dancing and fluttering

around each other on warm

summer days. A courting couple

may fly together for over an hour.

This female’s wings have

special colors and patterns

to attract male butterflies.

The male butterfly has a pair

of claspers that encloses the

female’s rear end.
