Clever caterpillars

Birds, lizards, and mammals love

the taste of caterpillars. So caterpillars

have developed plenty of ways to keep

these enemies away. Some disguise

themselves as snakes, or show off a

pair of big scary eyes. Other caterpillars

can blast a nasty-smelling spray into

the face of hungry predators.

Small snake?

The caterpillar puffs
up the front of its
body and shows off
its false eyes to trick
birds into thinking
it is a snake.

Simple eyes at the side
of their head allow
caterpillars to
make out light
and dark.

Zebra with horns

If you thought only large animals have
horns, then look again! The head horns
and long spiny hairs on this zebra
caterpillar warn predators that an
attack might be painful.
