Hide and seek
Not all butterflies and moths are brightly colored
to warn enemies that they are poisonous. In fact,
most moths—and some butterflies—are quite dull
in color. These insects have found another way of
protecting themselves. Just like caterpillars, these
adults use camouflage to hide from birds and reptiles.
This lets them blend in with the shapes, patterns, and
colors of trees, rocks, or leaves.
Bark blender
Birds would have a hard job finding
this little moth from tropical rain
forests. It is quite safe resting on the
tree trunk—as long as it keeps still!
The patterns and colors
of the moth’s wings help
it blend in with the
tree trunk.
