Butterflies and Moths

Escaping the weather

On a cold day, you might feel like staying in bed

or moving somewhere that is warm. Just like you,

butterflies and moths try to avoid the cold. Some

hibernate—this means finding a sheltered spot

and spending the winter asleep. Others form huge

groups and fly to warmer places to escape the cold.

This movement is called migration.

Sun seekers

The monarch migrates more than any other
butterfly on Earth. Groups of thousands fly
south from as far north as Canada to spend
the winter in the mountain forests
of Mexico and southern
California. They return
north in the spring.

Large wings
help monarchs
fly long distances
without tiring.

Monarchs stop
at flowers to
refuel on
sugary nectar.
