Butterflies and Moths

(Tuis.) #1

Just hanging around

Peacocks and small tortoiseshells
hang upside down when they
hibernate. Look for them in
garden sheds, hollow trees,
and even inside houses. They
do not eat or move for six
months until the spring.

Millions of monarchs

Migrating monarchs rest
together on pine trees
high up in the mountains.
Sometimes they are
covered with snow for
many days. If you stayed
outside for so long you
would die, but a chemical
in the butterflies’ blood
keeps them from freezing
to death.

Masses of hanging
butterflies cover the
tree for several months.

Don’t disturb hibernating
butterflies and moths—
they could die.

Flying fan

The painted lady is one
of the toughest butterflies
in the world—it can travel
up to 620 miles (1,000 km).
