Butterflies and Moths

In the garden

Filled with colorful, sweet-smelling

flowers, gardens attract lots of

butterflies by day and moths at

night. In the summer, you’ll see

caterpillars attacking leaves, moths

hiding in tree bark, and butterflies

sunbathing on flowers. During the

winter, a few of these insects seek

shelter indoors—but they may

come out for a visit on warm days.

Garden guest

The brimstone moth
is a familiar garden visitor.
It hides by day, but may come
out to find a new resting spot.
At dusk, look for the moth flying
around the lights of houses.

Large skipper

If your garden has lots
of colorful flowers, you
might see some large
skippers fluttering about.
At rest, the fore and hind
wings of these butterflies
are held at different angles.

This hawthorn leaf is
a good place for the
moth to lay its eggs.
