Butterflies and Moths

In the woodlands

Woodlands are one of the best places to look for

butterflies and moths. You’ll find butterflies fluttering

on flowers in sunny glades or resting on twigs and

branches, and moths hiding in leaf litter on the ground.

Look for caterpillars feeding on leaves and plants—some

hungry moth caterpillars cause a lot of damage by

stripping the leaves from trees.

Top of the tree

On hot summer days, look
for purple hairstreaks and
silver-washed fritillaries near
oak trees. They stay in the
canopy, which is the top
of the tree, when it is sunny.
They also sunbathe on
oak leaves near paths and
clearings when it is warm.

The purple hairstreak’s
shiny wings change
color in the sunshine.

The silver-washed fritillary
sunbathes with its orange-
spotted wings open.
