[97]. However, the pesticides should be applied at the right moment using modern
application methods, such as remote sensing, precision application, or controlled-
release formulations, and the compounds used should be efficient at low rates,
possess selective toxicity to pests and low toxicity to beneficial organisms and
humans, be highly biodegradable, and have a low mobility in water.


11.4 SUMMARY


Pesticides have many important functions in modern produce production, increasing
yields, preventing spoilage, and generally improving produce quality and safety.
However, they should be used judiciously; the adage “moderation in all things” also
holds true in this case.
