can mean the difference between total
success or losing several aircraft. Speed may
be the most desirable asset in a dog ght,
but if you are a sharp shooter, then surprise
de nitely gives a pilot the edge.
“Fortunately for both squadrons, the
German pilots were not expecting the P-38s
to be riding point for the bombers. Another
factor in this encounter was the fact that
there were also nine Me 109s in that area
which would jump into the ght once it
started. We went into a steep dive and the
Me 410s passed under us, we turned and
hit them from the right side. Thus, we had a
two-pronged pincer attack going for us. The
timing was perfect as we attacked from two
sides simultaneously.
“At 300 yards out, we all red as we
came in range. This split the enemy
formation with eight breaking to the left and
the remainder going to the right as they
were making an obvious attempt to form
two defensive circles. They didn’t have time
as we were on their tails for zero-degree
de ection shots!
“The Me 109’s joined in the ght and they
proved to be very aggressive. However, the
momentum was with the P-38s which were
all over the new challengers. As we lit into
the Me 410 formation [again] I set my sights
on one of them. I red at 300 yards out
and saw my rounds impact on the engine
nacelle and fuselage. A split second later
his engine failed, followed by ames.
“I got in behind him and red another
burst and that did him in. He crashed into
a freshly cultivated eld. When the mission
was over, the 82nd had scored one of their
biggest days of the war, with 21 con rmed
kills.”
With some of the P-38s keeping the
Luftwaffe occupied the bombers were able
to make it through to the target.
The 82nd Group was one of the most
important P-38 units to y in World War Two.
It ew a wide range of missions including
bomber escort (as described above),
attacked shipping and bombed and strafed
various targets of opportunity. It could boast
23 aces and 26 pilots with at least four
aerial victories.
