No ‘Snow Tiger’
De Havilland Aircraft of Canada was set up in 1928 to
assemble Moths, and was well placed at the outbreak of war
to supply the Royal Canadian Air Force with Tiger Moth
trainers. They were redesigned for the cold winter with
heated cockpits covered by a large sliding canopy, and ski
and float undercarriages could be fitted. More than 1,500 of
these re-designated DH.82Cs were delivered but they did
not find a ready post-war civil market and none are still
airworthy in Canada. The first to cross the Atlantic to the
motherland is G-FCTK, which was civilianised as CF-CTK
but has been stored since 1970.

High ground wreck
In November 1947 a 603 Squadron Spitfire was flying from
Chester to Edinburgh in low cloud when it smashed into
Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Such was the destruction
that the remains of SN611 were not discovered for five
months. They remained on the mountain until 1997 when
they were collected and sold to a private buyer for long-
term restoration. This project has now been registered
as G-SAEA.

Fun to Go
E-Go Aeroplanes has registered its first production aircraft
as G-OEGO with the intention of building eight this year.
The carbon-fibre Single Seat Deregulated design won the
2007 Light Aircraft Association competition for innovative
use of new materials and is a streamlined, fully enclosed
canard pusher with a 30hp Wankel rotary engine. The e-Go
was initially launched as the e-Fun, hence the prototype’s
registration G-EFUN.

Gnat bites
In Britain we remember the Folland Gnat as an RAF
primary jet trainer and the founding mount of the Red
Arrows, but it was initially designed to be a lightweight
low-cost fighter. India was the main customer, taking more
than 200 mostly licence-built by Hindustan Aeronautics.
They fought in both the 1965 and 1971 wars against
Pakistan, being dubbed ‘Sabre Slayer’ from their success
against Pakistan Air Force F-86s. G-SLYR should be ready
to join the Heritage Aircraft Team this summer, which
currently displays three Gnat Trainers.

Passion is fickle
The owners of restored Cessna Golden Eagle G-PVIP used
to profess a ‘Passion 4 Health’ but have now forsaken that
for a Passion 4 Autos. The rare Champion Traveler (correct
US spelling) G-ARAP was cancelled as being temporarily
withdrawn from use, which was quite true: it has just taken
31 years to re-emerge.

withdrawn from use
