Identifying cost savings is a key part of Hill’s day to day responsiblities

Houston: we don’t have a problem

A four-year stint in the US Air Force helped Scott Hill gain the qualifications and skills to launch

his career as a management analyst with the airports authority in his home city in Texas

energy saving totalling $499,550
per year. That retro-report has the
implementation cost of
$780,247, which would give
HAS a 1.56 year simple payback.
We are now working with Texas
A&M Energy Systems Laboratory
to implement this through their
continuous commissioning. It is
worth mentioning that this effort
is also being heavily supported
by our operations and mainte-
nance staff at HOU.
It must be hard to keep track of
everything
Another big project is infrastruc-
ture condition assessment. This
initiative is helping us to under-
stand the condition of our infra-
structure so that we can plan
and prioritise what projects we
need to focus on. We are cur-
rently building an up-to-date in-
ventory of our assets through the
use of geographic information
system technology. It has been a
great honour to be able to serve
my city and country throughout
my aviation career. I encourage
any young person who is debat-
ing career paths to consider one
in aviation. It is a global indus-
try that connects people, creates
innovation and strengthens
economies. Q

Have you always been
interested in aviation?
My father was in the US Air
Force and he was also a private
pilot. He definitely helped stir
my interest in aeronautics. Also,
when I was nearing the end of
high school, I was not totally pre-
pared to go straight to college.
That was when I made the best
decision of my life, which was to
follow in my father’s footsteps
and join the air force. It was there
that I had the honour of being a
part of the best aviation organisa-
tion in the world. I was able to
serve my country and also gain
technical and leadership skills
that have certainly helped in my
career thus far.
And the USAF helped you
become ready for college
While in the air force I was able
to finish my associates degree
from the Community College of
the Air Force. After my four-year
enlistment, I decided to move
back to my home town of Hou-
ston and be closer to family. I im-
mediately enrolled at Embry-
Riddle Aeronautical University
to pursue a Bachelor of Science
degree. It was during that time
that I was looking for my next ca-
reer. I was fortunate enough to
land a job with the Houston Air-
port System (HAS). I work for the
infrastructure division in asset
management. I was born and
raised in Houston, so I found it to
be a great opportunity to come
back home and work for the city
that I love. I have since earned a
masters in Aeronautical Science
at Embry-Riddle.

What are your daily duties?
I am a management analyst IV.
My job is to coordinate the devel-
opment of effective programmes
and computerised databases that
measure the success of the asset
management projects. These ini-
tiatives ensure efficiencies
throughout the HAS’s physical
infrastructure at all three air-
ports: George Bush Interconti-
nental (IAH), William P Hobby
(HOU) and Ellington. I am the
primary liaison and lead for all
asset management financial mat-
ters including budget, monitor-
ing and execution.
What key projects are you
working on?
One of our projects last fiscal

year was a retro-commissioning
programme at both IAH and
HOU. The retro-commissioning
focused mostly on heating, venti-
lating and air conditioning and it
identified energy savings oppor-
tunities. For example, once im-
plemented, at HOU’s main termi-
nal, we could see an annual
