Lanseria serves a dual purpose:
managing both scheduled airlines
and general aviation. Gavin Sayce,
the CEO and Airport Manager
of Lanseria, therefore has to
juggle growing the airport and its
scheduled operators and maintaining
a high level of security, while at the
same time accommodating general
aviation. Guy Leitch asks him the key
questions.

A

RE AIRLINE TRAFFIC NUMBERS
HOLDING STEADY OR GROWING?
The airline numbers are holding steady. They
obviously follow the usual seasonal pattern but
both kulula.com and 0ango are still maintaining
good load factors.

WHAT FEEDBACK ARE YOU GETTING ABOUT
YOUR PASSENGER EXPERIENCE?
We continue to receive a lot of positive feedback with regards to
the convenience Lanseria offers airline travellers as well as the high
level of customer service.

HAVE YOU FINISHED WITH THE TERMINAL
BUILDING EXPANSION FOR NOW?
No, we are constantly upgrading and extending the facilities.
The latest developments include finalising plans to change the
international arrivals and departures waiting areas in order to
accommodate larger passenger numbers and create more capacity
for future traffic. 3art of this involves the installation of a new a
baggage carousel.

HOW ARE YOU GETTING ON WITH AIR SPACE?
(CHARLES NORVAL, SENIOR OPERATIONS
MANAGER AT LANSERIA, REPLIES).
Very minor enlargement and re-shaping adjustments were made
to the /anseria lower airspace. This allowed for the development
of an Advanced-5eTuired Navigation 3erformance (A-5N3)
,nstrument )light 3rocedure (,)3). This is a simple approach to Ày
and will allow for an approach onto Runway 25 during inclement
meteorological conditions.
This is an important aspect for all operators and users of the
airport, as previously there had not been an ,)3 dedicated to
5unway 2 (neither for 5unway 24). ,t allows for predictability and
access to /anseria as a diversion airport for O5 Tambo.

As from 0arch 201, a second parallel route became
operational between Cape Town and /anseria. The routes are now
unidirectional and 5960 compliant, thus allowing for very efficient
Àight trajectories with associated fuel savings and a reduced carbon
footprint. ,t serves a large segment of the Àying community as it is
from )/200 upwards.

YOU SAID YOU WERE HOPING TO HAVE THE ILS
OPERATIONAL BY SEPTEMBER 2014. I SEE IT HAS NOW
BEEN INSTALLED BUT IS STILL NOT OPERATIONAL.
The final pieces of the ,/6 are being installed at the moment.
The main delay has been finalising the the ‘let down’ procedures
for the ,/6 with the 6ACAA. They have a backlog of procedures
that they are working through, so it is taking some time to get them
approved.

HOW HAS THE GNSS APPROACH BEEN WORKING?
By all accounts it has been working very well.

HAVE YOU HAD MANY DIVERSIONS?
We have had a number of diversions, but nothing out of the
ordinary.

THERE SEEMS TO BE A NEED FOR HIGH SPEED AND
RAPID EXIT TAXIWAYS (RETs) TO CLEAR THE RUNWAY
MORE QUICKLY. ARE YOU CONSIDERING THESE?
:e did look at 5(Ts when we were busy with the design of the
new runway, but we do not see a need for it nor can we justify the
cost at this time.

TWO YEARS AGO YOU SAID THE NEXT BIG STEP IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF SECURITY BETWEEN AIRSIDE AND
LANDSIDE IS TO INSTALL AIRSIDE GATES BETWEEN
THE HANGARS AND THE TAXIWAYS AND RUNWAYS.
SO FAR NOT MUCH HAS HAPPENED, WHY IS THIS?
:e have been battling to find a solution that will work on the
sloping ground in some places. :e want to get it right the first time
and do not want to install gates that are constantly broken.

WHO WILL OPERATE THE GATES? WILL YOU
HAVE TO MAN THEM THE WHOLE TIME?
They will be controlled by the operations centre. The gates will
be manned at peak times when they remain open for extended
periods, therafter they will be monitored via CCT9 cameras.

HOW MANY GATES WILL YOU HAVE,
AND WHERE WILL THEY BE?
There will be five gates )reight apron A2, %2 and %3 taxiways
and at the entrance to (xecu-et (which has already been installed).

HOW ARE RELATIONS WITH THE TENANTS?
We always endeavour to do our best to interact with our tenants
