ANNIVERSARY
Russian Helis Mi-26T
heavy-lift helicopter
celebrates 30 years

During January “Rostvertol”, a member
of Rostec’s Russian Helicopters Holding,
marked the 30th anniversary of the
serial production launch of the
world’s largest cargo helicopter,
the Mi-26T. The machine is
capable of carrying up to 20 tons
of cargo, and is still holds the
record for total carrying capacity.

Mi-26T was based on the Mi-26
military transport helicopter, the
development of which began in the
70s at the M.L. Mil R&D Center,
which is now also a member of
Russian Helicopters.

The Ministry of Defense, as the
customer, was satisfied with the

results of the helicopter’s testing and
recommended that it be mass produced, as
well as adopted into the Soviet army.

In 1981, the Mi-26 was first demonstrated at the
International ParisAirShow at Le Bourget.
The demonstration of the heavy-lifting helicopter
to the world created a furor. Foreign customers
became interested in the
chopper.

The Mi-26T helicopter is
capable of carrying up to
20 tons of equipment and
massive cargo on its external
suspension or in the cargo hold,
and today it still holds the record
for carrying capacity, according
to a company press release.

NEW HELI

Russia, China To Develop High
Altitude Version Of Mi-26 Helicopter

Chinese M-26T Helicopter to be developed into high
altitude version with Russia.
Russia and China will be developing a high
altitude version of M-26 helicopter with a
take-off weight of 38 tons that can be used on
plateaus under thermal climate conditions,
Chinese PLA military online reported citing
Russian news sources.
The improved version will have a smaller
capacity and take–off weight than those of the
M-26 helicopters but will be equipped with
M-26’s D-136 engine which makes it superior
in terms of thrust-weight ratio and mobility.

SAR
Netherlands retires SAR
Agusta-Bell 412 fleet

From 1 January 2015,
the Netherlands
Defence organisation
has taken its
characteristic yellow
AB-412 search-and-
rescue helicopters
out of service.
These helicopters,
which flew for
Defence Helicopter
Command, are to be
disposed of.
Consequently, 303
Squadron, stationed at Leeuwarden Air Base,
will be disbanded in the near future.

During the course of 2014, the 3 Defence AB-412
helicopters were deployed over 230 times for carry-
ing out medical transports and Search and Rescue
(SAR) tasks for missing persons. In total, the 303
Squadron helicopters made almost 5,500 life-saving
and emergency sorties. The AB-412s are being
divested on account of the introduction of the new
NH90 maritime helicopter. The helicopters are now
being sold to the Peruvian Air Force.
