ould the behaviour of birds
predict the weather, asked

One bird with
extraordinary weather forecasting
powers is the veery, a small thrush
with a whirling, flute-like song. It
lives in woodlands of the northern
US and southern Canada during its
summer breeding season, and in
September and October migrates to
the Amazon. But there are years
when the birds cut short their
breeding season and some give up
breeding altogether before
migrating early.
Why the veeries behave like this
was a mystery until Dr Christopher
Heckscher at Delaware State
University looked back at 19 years of
his observations of the birds’ nesting
seasons. He discovered that veeries
bred early during years when there
was going to be a severe Atlantic
hurricane season before migrating
early for the winter, avoiding the
worst storms. The birds went to
great trouble to prepare for early
migrations by developing their
annual flight feathers earlier. They
also made their nests early and laid
more eggs, literally putting more of
their eggs in one basket. In contrast,
when hurricane seasons were going
to be calmer, the veeries extended
their breeding season, and in very
quiet hurricane seasons they even
raised more than one brood of
young, which was rare. Most
incredible of all, the birds
anticipated the hurricane season
months in advance, and their
forecasts matched or were better
than those of meteorologists.
How the birds made their
predictions so far in advance was
difficult to explain. One possibility is
that the birds could sense the
El Niño/La Niña cycle of the Pacific
— in El Niño years the hurricane
season is subdued, but during La
Niña years the season is more
intense. Or perhaps the birds sensed
something in the environment of
which we are unaware. If so, finding
out what the birds are perceiving
may help us to improve our own
long-range forecasts of the severity
of a hurricane season.
