MaryKathryn“Kay”Leidenheimer(néeKel-
ly,derivedoriginallyfromKrehlik)was born
on May16,1931in Peanut–arural coal
miningcommunityin mountainouswest
central Pennsylvania.Shewasraisedin
neighboringDerry.The thirdof sevenchil-
dren,Kay andher siblingsgrewup during
the GreatDepression.Watchingher father
workfirst as acoal miner,later the railroad,
and owningalunchcounterbusinessgave
her astrongworkethic.Her motherindus-
triouslycooked,baked,andcannedwhile
raisingthe kids.Kay enjoyedbeingoutside
withher muchadmireddad Joseph-work-
ing the gardenharvestfor her mother’sun-
endingkitchenefforts.At12years old, with
greatpride,Kay tookoverher olderbrother
Joe’sresponsibilityof firingup the coal fur-
naceat the one-roomschoolhousebehind
theirhouse.Kay was aseriousstudentwho
shinedacademicallybut tookbusinessprep
coursesrather than collegeprepcourses–a
paththat she wouldlatertravel.She joined
the debatecluband enjoyedresearching
complexissues,sharingher perspectives
with othersand hearingtheirs.
As ayoungadult,Kay left Derryto join her
oldersisterJane in WashingtonD.C. where
she workedher wayup throughthe Cen-
tral IntelligenceAgency’ssecretarialpool.
She relishedthe cosmopolitanlifestyleand
stylishlydressedthe part.InitiallyKay lived
in awomen’sdormsettingin the Capitol
Hill neighborhood.Throughouther life,she
wouldperiodicallyvisit this neighborhood,
fondlyrelivingthosedays.While workingat
the Central IntelligenceAgency,she met her
husband,Bob.They weremarriedfor nearly
60 yearsuntil his passingin 2017.
Duringtheirmarriage,the couplehad three
children-Teresa,Nancy,and BobJr.Ini-
tially,Kay wasastay-at-homeMom,sew-
ing dressesfor the girls,makingdelicious
healthymeals,preparingthe kids for the an-
nualchildren’sHalloweencostumeparade,
and takingall the kids to variousactivities
suchas pre-school,gymnastics,and swim
team.The familymaderegulartripsbackto
Derryto visit Kay’sbirth family,wherethe
womenand girlsmadewonderfuleastern
Europeanethnicfoodaroundalargekitch-
en tableand the menand boyswatched
football/baseballgamesand the mendrank
highballs.Kay loved thesereunions,and the
entirefamilyenjoyedtheseboisterousand
cheerfulvisitswith whatwas by thenavery
largethree-generationfamily.Inthe early
1970’s, Bobwas attachedto the U.S. Embas-
sy in Bonn,Germany.Duringthoseyearsthe
familytraveledthroughoutEurope,much to
the delightof Kay,who particularlyenjoyed
Paris.Bonn had avery activesocialscene
and Kay enjoyedhostingmanyelegantgath-
eringsat theirapartment,attendingformal
Embassyevents(for whichshe madeher
ownbeautifulformalgowns),and discover-
ing Germany’sfestivalsand traditionssuch
as Oktoberfestand ThreeKing’sDay,tradi-
tionsof whichwereincorporatedinto her
holidaycelebrations.
Afterthe familyreturnedto the States,
andwhenthe kidswereteenagers,Kay
continuedto raise the kids whilepursuing
her dreamof ahighereducation.In those
challengingyears,Kay graciouslytolerated
the girlsbringinghomean unauthorized

partsof the house,and taughtTeresa to sew
and supportedNancy’stalentfor tennisand
Bob’sfor footballamidcompletingcollege
prepworkat NorthernVirginiaCommunity
College.SubsequentlyKay attendedGeorge
MasonUniversity,whereshe earnedher
bachelor’sdegreein accounting.She went
on to becomeacertifiedpublicaccountant,
ultimatelyworkingas an internalauditor
for Citibank.She lovedthe financialworld
so muchthat her leisuretimewas spentin
investingin securitiesand otherfinancialin-
struments,all the whilebuying,renovating,
selling,andrentingpropertiesin the McLean
area.She wasawoman ahead of her time,
followingthe exampleset by her owntrail-
blazingmother.Kay’sfavorite storiesof her
own mother(alsonamedMary)werethat of
teachingherselfto drivewhenno one else
would,as well as her momattendingmen’s
softballgameswhenit wassimply“not
done”.Kay adoptedtheseindependent,de-
terminedand mold-breakingtraits.
As the childrenbecameadultsKay was
proud of theirprofessional accomplish-
ments.She was delightedwheneachof her
sevengrandchildrencamealong,oneofher
biggest joys was spendingtimewiththem.
Overthe years,she attendedcountless
sportingevents,balletand pianorecitals,
performances,plays and scholasticcompe-
titions,even takingsomegrandchildrento
Yosemite.When takingany of her grandkids
for outings,she madesure they had orange
juice,jacketsand sunscreen!She was ade-
votedand proudgrandmother,even coming
to Louisianato helpwhenNancy’sthree
childrenwereborn.Sheenjoyedtalking
withNancy’shusbandRon abouther Penn-
sylvaniaupbringsinceRon’smotherwas
fromarural townneighboringDerry.
In theirlateryearsKay and Bob lovedto
travel,visitingAlaska,Panama,andGreece
to nameafew destinations.Thesetrips
werewonderfullydocumentedby Bob,an
amateurphotographer.After she no longer
traveledabroad,she particularlytreasured
the giftedtrinketsfromTeresa’stravels
abroad.
Kay had manyhobbiesin additionto invest-
ing.She was alife-longfitnessenthusiast
and workedout daily,eventuallyturningher
basementinto awell-equippedgym.Fora
time,she enjoyedhorsebackriding,apur-
suit she pickedup fromaphysicaleducation
classshe took in college.Kay was a“gadget
girl” -anearly adopterof newtechnology
suchas personalcomputers,cell phones,
GPSnavigationsystems,and heartrate
monitors.She had refinedtastein home
decoratingand landscaping,and waspar-
ticularlyfondof her belovedMagnoliatrees,
plantedas saplingsover50 yearsago.Her
favoriteroominthe housewas asunroom
lookingout over asemi-woodedarea.It was
therethat she spentmuchof her time,en-
joyingthe peacefulnessof nature.Her life-
long appreciationof naturewas broughtfull
circlewhenshe and Bob boughtacabin in
the foothillsof the BlueRidgeMountains.
Additionally,she enjoyedthe performing
arts,especiallythosehostedat the Kennedy
Center.Kay also had asenseof communi-
ty responsibility,volunteeringfor Mealson
Wheels,aswell as donatinggenerouslyto
variouscharitiesand politicalorganizations.
Kay is survivedby her daughterTeresa Leid-
enheimerand her two children,Cassieand
Tanya Traeger;her daughterNancyLeid-
enheimerand husbandRon Maloneyand

guitar.Animalsgreatand smallrecognized
him as an ally and lovedhim back.He had
an appreciationfor little-noticeddetail
in art, carpentry,and architecture.Most
notablyhis kindness,thoughtfulness,and
outgoingnaturemadehim friendsevery-
wherehe went.
Ed tookpridein his Navyservice,and he
wasanatural creatorand entrepreneur,
foundingIran’sfirst pencilfactoryin Teh-
ranin1967,andlateranewsdigestwhich
chronicledFarsi-languageradio broadcasts
forIranexpertsinacademia,industry,and
governmentfollowingthe 1979Iranianrev-
olution. He remodeledahousein Chevy
Chasewithhis owndesignand handsfor
his family’shome from 1981 onwards.
He is survivedby his lovingwife,Golnaz
of 57 years;his childrenAlexMahoneyof
Washington,DC and MiriamBizup(and her
husband,David)of Hollywood,MD;one
brotherThomasMahoney(andhis wife
Elenora) of Clearwater,FL; grandchildren

Abram, whopassedawaywithhis loving
familyby his side.
Donwasknownfor his hospitalityand
successfulrestaurant endeavors,from his
earlydaysat Clyde’sinGeorgetown,to
openingChadwicksof Old Town, and his
hugelypopularCalvertGrillein the Del Ray
neighborhoodofAlexandria.Tothisdayhe
is missedby manylovingpatrons.Don’s
passionforfoodandfriendscontinuedaf-
ter retiring.Hecould be foundand contin-
uedtoexcelinthekitchenwithhisfamily
favoriterecipesfor holidaysand numerous
familygatherings.
Don was anaval veteran and servedon the
USS FranklinD. Roosevelt,aMidway-class
aircraft carrier.Heexcelledat skiingand
servedon the ski patrolwhenhe livedin
Telluride,CO. Don lovedAlexandriaand his
homeontheChesapeakeBay.Heloved
life and will be missedby his familyand
manyfriends.Acelebrationoflifewillbe
hostedby his familyat the bay in earlyfall.

and golfingwithhis friendsand beingafun
grandfather.
In additionto his wife,Jim is survivedby
hissisterLindaGriffin;sonChris(Monique);
and grandchildrenNoelle,Lyla, Ilyse,Grant,
Sophie,Avelineand Pierce;daughterStac-
ey (Paul); and grandchildrenMattand Mark;
and manylovingfamilymembers.

Chicago.Heand Anitaweremarriedat the
SheratonMt. RoyalHotelin Montreal,Can-
ada on April2, 1966duringhis first yearof
residency.Whilecompletinghis residen-
cy,his daughterDeborah wasborn.Ralph
thenservedat PortsmouthNavalHospital
for 2years.Ralphand his familymovedto
Washington,DC area,wherehis two sons,
Iraand Michaelwereborn.Ralphstarted
his ownpractice,and he deeplycaredfor

his patientsfor 50 years.Ralphpracticed
Freudianpsychiatryandhadasenseof
humorto match.He lovedto travelwith
his wifeandvisitedover 130 countries.
Theylovedplanningfor theiruniquetrips,
collectingart fromall overthe world,and
carefullyplacingthemin theirhome.Ralph
also enjoyedhis tropicalfish and was often
moreknowledgeablethanthe specialtyfish
storeowners.Hehad 10 tanksincludinga
110 gallontank.He was agreat dancerand
was nevershy with his dancemoves.Ralph
was adaily devoteeto crosswordpuzzles.
He alwayshad time to help his childrenwith
homework,evenafteralong day at his of-
fice,oragameof cardswithhis grandkids.
Ralph’sbiggestpridewas his wife,children,
and his grandchildren.He is survivedby his
wife,Anita;his children,Deborah Kornblu-
th Berger(Burman)of Rockville,MD, Dr.Ira
(Michele)Kornbluthof Pikesville,MD, and
Michael(Jennifer)Kornbluthof ChapelHill,
NC;11 adoringgrandchildrenBenjamin,
Eli, Ezra, Simone,Shoshana,Isaac,Eva, Avi,
Mitchel,Milesand Sayna,and manynieces,
nephewsand cousins.Ralph is predeceased

by friendsand family,had akind heart,and

emigratedto GermanyfromConstantinople
in the 19th century.“Stass” wasastudent at
Berlin’sAcademischeGymnasiumin 1935,
whenHitlerJugendfootsoldiersassaulted
him and his brother,and left themseriously
injured.The familyfled to Greeceto escape
Nazism;afterthe Axis occupationof Greece
in 1941,Stassservedas amemberof the

GreekEKKAresistancemovement. Stass
emigratedto the US in 1954and changed
his professionfromlaw to physics.In1961,
he joinedNASA,and,as the Head of God-
dardSFC’sRadiationPhysicsOffice,worked
on researchin magnetosphericphysics,
geomagnetism, solar-terrestrial relation-
ships,natural and man-maderadiationex-
posure,radiation effectson biologicaland
electronicsystemsand components,and
radiationenvironmentmodeling.Stass was
the principalinvestigatorin multipleoriginal
researchfor NASA,and he was the author
or co-authorof hundredsof papersand
articlesin peer-reviewedscientificjournals
and booksin the field of spaceradiation.He
was awardedapatentin 2008for his min-
iaturizedradiationspectrometer,currently
on the NASADSCOVRsatellite.At95years
of age,heco-authoredaNASATechnical
Report“Forty-Year ‘Drift’andChangeof
the SouthAtlanticAnomaly(SAA)”,making
him one of the oldestpublishingresearch
scientistsin NASA’s history.Stass and his
late wifeEffieweretogetherfor 67 years.
Theyare survivedby theirdaughterYolanda
and son-in-lawAnastassiosChassiakos,and
theirthreegrandchildren,Anastasia,George
(Tenzing),and Alexander.Funeral services
