38 General Aviation in China

AUSTRALIAN FLYING January - February 2015

“It’s the same with any business
relationship that you build up in
Asia, you don’t go up there, have
one meeting and sign the deal,” he
said. “These things take quite a long
time and there’s a lot of relationship
building and most importantly,
building of trust.”
Aviation Australia has a two-
pronged approach to Chinese
students, intending to both work
within the Chinese vocational
education system to provide
basic aviation management
training, and also providing
options for more focused
aerospace training in Australia.
“What we’re hoping to do is
provide a pathway into either a
diploma of aircraft maintenance
engineering or a diploma of
business with a focus on cabin
crew management, which
will be delivered down here in
Australia,” Brooks said.
A former tourism industry
marketing executive with vast
experience in China, Brooks has a
better-than-average understanding

of the ins and outs of business there.
But he cautions any Australian
company to do their homework,
be sure of their ability to deliver on
what they promise, and be ready to
do the hard yards in establishing
relationships. The Chinese
market has now been dealing with
international companies long enough
to have been burnt by those hoping
to make a quick dollar.
“Chinese companies can be rather
cautious of people and organisations
trying to come in and just try to grab a
big slice of the market without building
those relationships,” he said. “Flight
training is a classic example. The
CAAC have granted overseas training
approvals and they’ve been bitten quite
a few times out of the US and even
out of Australia, so there can be a bit
of reluctance, and again it comes back
to those core fundamentals, those
relationships. There are organisations
that have been working the market
for a long time that are putting a lot of
effort in and they are the ones that are
going to win.”
And research needs to be targeted
