  • China is a mammoth nation, in
    both geography and bureaucracy.
The sheer size of the infrastructure
    brings its own challenges.
“Just the scope and the size of
the country is a challenge in itself,”
Brooks said. “Even a company like
us, who have had some pretty good
    success with this current relationship
    and partnership, understand that
what we have achieved is still
    somewhat ‘Shanghai centric’. Beijing
can be a whole different kettle of fish,
a whole different market. It’s almost
like a number of countries within
    a country. It’s quite a daunting,
    overwhelming place.”

Opportunties

abound

Brooks believes Australia is a
natural fit for involvement with
China’s aviation boom, particularly
in the field of engineering and pilot
training. Our proximity, existing
cultural ties, mature and respected
regulatory environment and even the
volume of Chinese students choosing

to study in Australia are all factors
in relationship building.
“I think our regulatory system
here under CASA is quite highly
regarded,” Brooks said. “CASA is
generally regarded as having high
standards, our examinations are
challenging and we provide a good
standard of work-ready graduate.
The other specific advantage to
Aviation Australia is that we can
also provide an EASA regulatory
outcome for engineering students.

In terms of the global employability
or skills of the students, this is seen
as a great positive.
“Australia really is ideally placed
to assist with the ongoing growth
of Chinese aviation. We’ve got an
ideal social environment, a good
regulatory environment and a high-
quality standard of training. We
have diverse weather and landscape
that is ideally suited to pilot
training – whether it is our coastal
areas or the outback. We’ve got

controlled airspace and military
airspace, yet we’ve also got a lot
of open airspace to maximise the
student’s exposure to a wide variety
training opportunities.”
With other nations’ aerospace
industries looking to China,
Australian companies will face
competition for the growing
market. But our aerospace
businesses already have a toe hold
in what may become the world ’s
largest aviation market.
