In Tasmania, Par Avion
Flight Training, the operator of
Cambridge Airport, has teamed
up with Airlines of Tasmania, and
the REX-owned Australian Airline
Pilot Academy (AAPA) in Wagga
has opened a $28 million training
complex, which covers all phases of
flight training, including private and
commercial licences. Virgin, after
their inaugural program in 2012,
now operates their Pilot Cadetship
Program in partnership with Flight
Training Adelaide.

But are there jobs?

With all these new pilots looking
for work in aviation, Boeing’s
market outlook for 2013-32 might
offer some joy. Their respected
industry forecast of personnel
demand projects a requirement
for 498,000 new commercial
airline pilots and 556,000 new
maintenance technicians over the
next 20 years. Demand for airline

pilots in Asia makes up a third of
this projected demand. A potential
shortfall of 1000 pilots per year is
estimated in China alone, with its
demand for new pilots projected
to be 77,400 or 15% of the Boeing
forecast. Chinese airlines are
offering higher wages
to help meet this demand, with
recently advertised salaries as
much as $212,400.

Slightly less optimistic is
Au st ra l i a’s Job Outlook for Air
Transport Professionals, put out by
the Australian Government. It states
that over the five years to November
2018, the number of job openings
for air transport professionals
is expected to be below average,
between 5001 and 10,000.
UNSW offers this assessment:
“Although there are presently many

more pilots than jobs, the industry
universally is forecast to continue
growth for at least the next 20
years. The clear message for all
prospective pilots is that if you are
well trained with a sound aviation
background, and if you have the
will, commitment and motivation,
you are likely to establish yourself
to succeed in a rewarding, exciting
and enjoyable profession.”
