AUSTRALIAN FLYING March – April 2015
GET FITTED IN TIME
More information on ADS-B mandates is available at
http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/projects/ads-b/other-mandates-2014-
Flying IFR? We’re urging all IFR aircraft to allow enough time to be
fitted with ADS-B ahead of CASA’s 2 February 2017 fitment mandate.
Where do you fit? On or after Requirement
All flights at/above FL290 Implemented on 12 December 2013 Must be ADS-B capable
Addition to Australian register Implemented on
6 February 2014
Must be ADS-B capable
GNSS avionics required
Replacement transponder Implemented on
6 February 2014
Must be ADS-B transponder
Operating 500NM from Perth 4 February 2016 Must be ADS-B capable
IFR aircraft (aerial work/private operations) 4 February 2016 GNSS avionics required
Operate to BNE, SYD, PER or MEL 4 February 2016 Mode S transponder required
All IFR aircraft 2 February 2017 Must be ADS-B capable
way, which it has learnt might not
be through applying rules. EASA
at last realises it can’t make GA
safer by increasing regulation. Good
luck Mark in getting that message
to your ex airline and military
CASA bureaucrats – I’ll have the
marshmallows ready for your burning
at the stake as a heretic if you try!
What do I think was missing from
Mark ’s wish list? Easy – demonstrate
a just and ethical culture and rebuild
industry trust, two key outcomes
of the recent review.

Hi, Steve.
The Australian Aviation Hall of
Fame (AAHOF) has commenced the
journey from a virtual presentation
via its web site to a bricks-and-mortar
facility specifically designed to honour
the contributions of its inductees.
Following from the success of
three annual inductions, the hall is
now embarking on a feasibility study
to determine what is required for its
facility in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
The City of Wagga Wagga is
right behind the initiative with
Mayor Rod Kendall publicly
claiming at the 2014 Induction that
the city fully supported the aims
and objectives of the hall.
The objective has moved one step
closer with strong commitments
of support from not only the City
but also Federal Member, Michael
McCormack and State Member
Daryl Maguire.
We have agreed to undertake
a feasibility study as the first
significant step to reach our goal. We
hope, with the support of the three
levels of government, to complete
the study during 2015 so that we can
plan and fund the facility.
Thus far 26 individuals have been
inducted with three organisations
awarded the Southern Cross Award
and one special recognition. There
are many more worthy candidates
for induction given Australia’s rich
heritage in civil aviation.
Nominations for induction may be
made by anyone through AAHOF’s
web site – http://www.aahof.com.au.
The 2015 Induction will be held
in Wagga Wagga on Saturday 19
September at a gala dinner. Tickets
will be available via the web site.

Simon’s Plane
I was browsing the Jan/Feb 2015 mag,
and when I got to page 79 about the
SAA’s endless efforts to give home
built aircraft a better name, I had a
strange feeling ... a visual stimulation.
The aircraft used as a watermark for
the page seemed very familiar. I tilted
and turned to get the best light, then
realised it is my aircraft RV7 VH-
SPB in her old livery! I finally got her
in Australian Flying. Awesome ...
fame at last! She has had a paint job
since then and is still for sale.
Regards
Simon
G’day Simon. Yes, it is indeed your
RV7. And so you don’t have to tilt
the mag to get the best light, here she
is on the top of page 13 in full colour!
Cheers, Hitch
After three years of inductions, The
Australian Aviation Hall of Fame is moving
