The Australian Division
of the Royal Aeronautical
Society (RAeS) has decided
to revamp the Wings
Awards for 2015.
The RAeS and Australian
Flying inaugurated the
award scheme last year
to recognise the service
of individuals and groups
to general aviation in
Australia.
Instead of the eight
categories open last year,
the 2015 Wings Awards
will contain only five
categories, one of which is a
new award to recognise the
service of individuals
to general aviation.
Also open for 2015
are Aero Club of the
Year, Flying Training
Organisation of the Year,
Flying Instructor of the
Year and GA Airport of the
Year. Product Innovation
and Aircraft of the Year
have been discontinued.
“These awards were very
well received by the GA
sector. As a result it has
been decided to make these
permanent annual awards,”
said RAeS spokesman
Andrew Drysdale.
“We were delighted with
the response last year; in
particular with the very
high standards that were
set in a number of the
submissions.
“Learning from the
inaugural year we will be
making a number of small
changes, but in particular
we will be introducing a new
award: Lifetime Service to
General Aviation. This will
be our premier award to
recognise those pioneers
of GA throughout Australia
who have contributed so
much to the founding
and development of this
vital sector of the aviation
i ndu st r y.”
And for the first time,
people will be able to
nominate on-line via the
Australian Flying website
http://www.australianflying.
com.au, which the RAeS
believes will help the judges
by putting the nominations
in a standard format.
According to Australian
Flying editor Steve
Hitchen, the quality of the
submission gives a greater
chance of success.
“Last year the only way
to submit was via e-mail,
and we certainly got a
healthy number. However,
we need to stress the
importance of the
submission addressing the
criteria properly. There were
a few nominations last year
that didn’t constitute much
more than a few words.”
The judging criteria will
be on the Australian Flying
website on 16 February,
with nominations opening
on 31 March and closing
on 30 June. The winners
will be announced on 1
October 2015.
