on-campus administration centre, operations’ room, crew room, lecture halls,
library, simulator centre and instructors’ briefi ng offi ces. The school owns
a fl eet of 57 Piper single-engine and multi-engine aircraft. All aircraft are
superbly maintained by an on-campus Aircraft Maintenance Organisation
(AMO). The AMO is also a training maintenance facility that provides
excellent on the job training for young people wishing to qualify as aviation
technical personnel.

FLIGHT SIMULATION

Various fl ight and radio simulators are used to complement ground and fl ying
training. The ALSIM AL50 FNTP I simulators are used for basic instrument
training, whilst the ALSIM AL 200 & AL 200 MCC FNTP II are used for
instrument procedural and more advanced training. In addition, 43 Air School
now also has a campus in Port Elizabeth, where Commercial Pilot graduates
now have the opportunity to be trained for the right hand seat in the facility’s
advanced Boeing 737 NG fi xed based simulator. An Airbus A320 fi xed based
simulator will be installed in 2015.

The school’s many grass runways are almost exclusively used for fl ying
training and procedures are tailored to accommodate the needs of training.
Students fi rst master the basic skills in the general fl ying areas which are
situated adjacent and overhead the airport. Thereafter, they learn to apply
their skills operationally in the more demanding air traffi c airspaces at Port
Elizabeth and East London Airports. Both airports are situated within 20
to 35 minutes of Port Alfred and are equipped with various navigation and
approach facilities, including primary and secondary radar. During the later
phases of training, students are exposed to international operations across
the entire southern African sub-continent.

CAREER PILOT DEVELOPMENT

43 Air School prides itself on offering students the best career advice
possible. It is committed to Pilot development for the local market and
has to date trained more previously disadvantaged pilots than any other

ATO in the country. It is committed to training not just for CPL without
any career prospects, but to ‘right hand seat’ airline ready. Its new range
of jet orientation programmes speaks of the philosophy of airline training
from the fi rst hour. The jet pilot programme is the only one of its kind in
South Africa and takes students from zero experience all the way through
to Jet MCC, Airline Pilot preparation and Boeing 737-800 type rating.
Traditionally CPL graduates would seek further qualifi cations through
an instructor rating, or various turbine type endorsements, with the end
intention of getting to the right hand seat of an airliner through logbook
hours. The jet pilot programme and the airline pilot preparation programme
will now circumnavigate this historical path. There are short, focused
courses available in the world such as jet bridge training, but none that
offers complete type rating and airline operations’ preparation. These new
offerings will benefi t students who require realistic, timeline specifi c end
to end training programmes that offer and recognise the requirements for
direct entry into the airline industry.
