he Atlantic hurricane
season officially starts on
June 1 and there are signs
it will be severe. There is a
continuing bout of La Niña
in the Pacific, which tends to help
hurricanes develop in the Atlantic.
And there is trouble brewing in the
Gulf of Mexico, where the surface
waters are already unusually warm,
providing the high-octane fuel that
hurricanes suck up for their
voracious energy needs.
The Gulf seas are also dangerous
because they are warm 100m below
the surface, which is crucial. As a
hurricane sweeps across an ocean
its mighty winds churn up colder
waters from below, cooling the
surface of the sea and putting the
brakes on any rapid intensification
of the storm. But with a deep
reservoir of warm water, the
hurricane churns up more heat and
so it can develop into a monster
storm, so long as the winds high
above are calm.
The Gulf of Mexico also has a
deep, warm current called the Loop
Current, which sweeps warm water
northwards into the Gulf, then loops
southeast around Florida and
eventually becomes the Gulf Stream.
That current can spin off giant
eddies of deep, warm water, which
can fuel hurricanes of immense
power. In 2005, one of these eddies
fuelled Hurricane Katrina, which
devastated New Orleans and much
of Louisiana. That was followed
three weeks later by Hurricane Rita
sweeping over the same eddy of
warm water, before it too exploded
into a category 5 storm.
This year the Loop Current looks
remarkably similar to 2005. It is also
reaching unusually far north in the
Gulf early in the hurricane season
and recent satellite data revealed it
had already reached the critical 26C
or warmer needed for hurricanes to
develop. There is another warning
sign. Last year, Hurricane Ida was
fuelled by a Gulf eddy before it
erupted into a devastating storm
that smashed through Louisiana and
eventually deluged the northeastern
US with flooding rains. That same
eddy is still swirling around some
200 miles south of Louisiana.
