Ollie Robinson’s attempt to push his
case for an England recall has been
derailed by the latest injury in a curious
and growing catalogue of setbacks.
The 28-year-old seamer pulled out of
the four-day County Select XI match
against a New Zealand XI because of a
sore back. When he has been fit, Robin-
son has taken 39 wickets at an impress-
ive average of 21.28 in nine Tests but he
was plagued by persistent back issues
during the Ashes and missed all three
Tests against West Indies in the winter.
He has featured only intermittently
for Sussex this season, dealt setbacks by
a dental problem and an upset stomach,
and was omitted from England’s squad
to take on New Zealand in the first Test
at Lord’s.
Robinson would have hoped to get
more overs under his belt in an attempt
to feature later in the three-match Test
series but suffered discomfort in his
back while warming up for the four-day
fixture at Chelmsford, which is the final
preparation for New Zealand before the
Test series begins on Thursday.
“Ollie Robinson has been withdrawn
from the County Select XI match
against New Zealand as a precaution
after he felt stiffness in his back during
the warm-up,” the ECB said. “Middle-

ground staff have produced good bat-
ting pitches and the balls haven’t been
the best, so if you’ve taken the wickets
he has you have really deserved it.”
Potts, who has taken four five-wicket
hauls for Durham this season, could
find himself lining up alongside the two
most prolific wicket-takers in England
history, with James Anderson and
Stuart Broad back involved after they

sex seamer Ethan Bamber was called
up as a replacement for the match.”
On the field there were two wickets
apiece for Ben Gibbon, the young
Worcestershire seamer, and Lancash-
ire’s Jack Blatherwick, while Liam
Patterson-White, the Nottinghamshire
slow left-armer took three. The New
Zealand XI finished the first day on 298
for eight, with Daryl Mitchell top-
scoring with 58.
One of the main beneficiaries of
Robinson’s fitness issues is Matthew
Potts, who earned his first England call-
up and could feature in the first Test.
Potts, the 23-year-old Durham seam-
er, is the leading wicket-taker in the
County Championship this season —
with 35 at 18.57 — and will confidently
make the step up to the highest level,
according to his county bowling coach.
“It won’t faze him at all,” Neil Killeen
said. “When he gets to that dressing
room, he’ll walk in like he’s been there
five years. It’s not about arrogance, he
just knows that he deserves to be there.
Injuries or no injuries, I believe Matty
should be with England.
“He showed glimpses of that last year
but he’s trained so hard over the winter.
He’s fitter, stronger, faster and he would
run through a brick wall for you.

and down the country this year. The

union. TMS was launched by the BBC in
1957 and was a fixture on Radio 3 MW
before it moved to Radio 4 LW in 1994.
It has also run on the digital channel
Radio 5 Sports Extra since 2002.
Its calypso theme music, Soul Limbo
by Booker T and the MGs, is one of the
enduring sounds of the summer.
Henry Blofeld, the former TMS com-
mentator, said: “It’s always been a little
bit surprising that the BBC has a pro-

over such a long time but is still reluc-
tant to showcase it as a winner.”
It is not the first time that the demise
of Radio 4 LW has been announced —
it was also proposed by the BBC in 2011
but in the end it was spared the axe.
It is not just TMS fans who may be af-
fected by the closure — the historian
Lord Hennessy has said that one of the
signals that Britain’s submarine com-
manders use to determine whether to
launch nuclear counter-strikes is if they
cannot tune into Radio 4 LW to check
the nation is still functioning.

Paul Stirling blitzed 34 runs off one
over en route to scoring 119 as Birming-
ham Bears began their Blast campaign
with a rain-affected 125-run hammer-
ing of Northamptonshire Steelbacks.
On debut for the Bears the Ireland
opener hit his T20 career-best score off
only 51 balls with nine fours and ten six-
es. He came within one maximum of
the perfect over having hit the debutant
James Sales for five straight sixes, but

abuse report

Gymnastics
Martyn Ziegler Chief Sports Reporter

The head national coach of British
Gymnastics has resigned from her
position before the expected publica-
tion of an investigation into abuse
allegations in the sport.
Amanda Reddin, who stood down
temporarily from the role in 2020 after
mistreatment claims were made against
her, has always denied any wrongdoing.
Reddin, 56, was cleared of those alle-
gations by an independent disciplinary
panel but further historical complaints,
unrelated to her employment at British
Gymnastics, are still being investigated.
The review of abuse allegations
within gymnastics, commissioned by
UK Sport and Sport England in 2020,
has been led by Anne Whyte QC and

the final report is due to be published at
the end of this month.
British Gymnastics said it had been
“mutually agreed” Reddin would leave
her role with the women’s artistic team.
“British Gymnastics recognises Aman-
da’s commitment to gymnastics and the
time she has dedicated to the sport,” the
governing body said in a statement.
“Amanda has, and continues to, fully
co-operate with all investigations.”
In 2020, the Olympic bronze medal-
list Amy Tinkler revealed that part of a
formal complaint she made to British
Gymnastics related to her “experien-
ces” with Reddin. Two other gymnasts
had also made allegations against
Reddin, with the Rio 2016 gymnast
Ruby Harrold claiming the coach
presided over a “culture of fear”.
Last year the chairman of British
Gymnastics, Mike Darcy, apologised
for abusive practices and said bullying,
weight-shaming and forcing injured
gymnasts to train were not acceptable.
British Gymnastics is the subject of a
legal claim by 37 former gymnasts,
including three Olympians, who say
they were victims of alleged systemic
physical and psychological abuse.

“He’s quick to ask questions and he
likes to be one of the lads,” Killeen said.
“He’s never afraid to speak up. My first
memories of Matty were as a 14-year-
old, a livewire, ‘Jack the Lad’. Now he’s
one of the main characters in our
dressing room.”
