THE OPPOSITION
The S-125 Neva/Pechora surface-
to-air missile system was first
deployed around Moscow in
1961, but from 1964 on was
eclipsed by the improved S-125M
and S-125M-1. Code-named
“GA-3 Goa” by NATO, it consists
of two to four two-stage rockets
capable of hitting aircraft flying at
lower altitudes, guided by three
radar systems. The F-117 was
specifically designed to foil
missile systems such as these.
