eathrow Airport was a wondrous
place to a young spotter with its
sheer number and variety of aircraft
and airlines that could be seen in
a single day. The  rst time I spent a full day
there was on Wednesday April 11, 1984. The
chosen location to watch the action was the

viewing terrace on the ‘Queens Building’,
which had a good view of the western part
of the airport and approaches. At that time,
it overlooked part of the aprons and piers of
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (later this would
be restricted to just the latter). Across the
southerly runway Terminal 4 was under
