From fabric J, cut twenty-nine

(29) 4in squares and eighty-

eight (88) 2in squares. Cut in half

diagonally once (for the background).

From fabric K cut thirty-one

(31) 4in squares and eighty-

eight (88) 2in squares cut in half

diagonally once (for the background).

From fabric L, cut eight (8) 4in

x WOF strips for the border.

Making the blocks

From each of your 4in x 8in

rectangles, cut a 45-degree

triangle from each of the corners, as

in Fig 1. Line up your ruler 2in in

from each side using the 45-degree

markings, then trim. This will create

a ‘jewel’ shape with points at each end.

Ta ke fou r (4) back g r ou nd h a l f-

square triangles and lay them out

around your step 7 piece. Stitch the

triangles to each corner of the block

with a in seam. Your triangles will

extend by in at each end (Fig 2).

Stitch and press open the corners

one at a time. Repeat to make one-

hundred-and-nine (109) blocks in

total (Fig 3). The blocks should still

measure 4in x 8in.

Lay out the blocks and

background squares, as in Fig 4,

or in your own layout if you prefer.
