UEFA confirm
third competition
European football’s governing body says its new
club competition will be called the Europa
Conference League and will start in 2021.
The 32-team competition will feature cup
winners and league runners-up from Europe’s
lowest-ranked countries, as well as the third,
fourth, fifth and sixth-placed finishers from
higher ranked countries.
Teams that finish in third in the Europa League
group stage will enter the new competition at the
knockout stage. As a result, the Europa League
group stage will be reduced to 32 teams.
UEFA’s executive committee, meeting in
Ljubljana in Slovenia, also announced that the
top three tiers of the Nations League will be
expanded to four-team groups. Leagues A, B
and C will each contain 16 teams, while League
D will feature seven teams.
As a result, Germany, Croatia, Iceland and
Poland, who finished bottom of their respective
League A groups last year, will no longer be
relegated to the second tier.
It was also confirmed that the Final of the
2021 Champions League will be held in Saint
Petersburg, with the 2022 and 2023 Finals in
Munich and Wembley respectively.
The 2021 Europa League Final will be held at
Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.

the-table clash.
ARDA TURAN
Barcelona’s midfielder, who is currently on loan
at Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir, was given
a suspended sentence of two years and eight
months for firing a gun
to cause fear and panic,
for the illegal possession
of weapons and of
intentional injury. The
32-year-old was involved
in a fight in an Istanbul
nightclub last year that
left singer Berkay Sahin
with a broken nose. Turan
later arrived at hospital
with a gun which he fired
at the ground.

by the Hamburg attorney general’s office of
sending the images to a recipient in Hamburg
