W
ith 12 top-flight sides in
Buenos Aires, there are
plenty of derby games in
the Argentinian capital.
But while Boca-River may be the game
that divides a nation and enthralls the
rest of the world, the real local affair
is the Avellaneda clasico.
With just 500 metres separating
Independiente’s Estadio Libertadores
de America from Racing’s Estadio
Presidente Juan Domingo Peron,
there is no middle ground when
it comes to local loyalties.
Both clubs are among what are
considered to be the country’s “big
five” and have won the national title
33 times between them, with Racing’s
2014 victory putting them one ahead
in the bragging stakes.
On the continental stage, Racing
won the 1967 Libertadores Cup and also
became the first Argentinian side to win
the Intercontinental Cup. Independiente,
however, hold the upper hand in this
area, having won the Libertadores a
record seven times, including four in a
row between 1972 and 1975, and were
Intercontinental champions twice, in 1973
and 1984.
With the grounds and fans being in
such close proximity, games between
the two sides can be extremely
volatile, to say the least.
In November 1961 a brawl among
the players saw the referee issue
eight red cards – four to each side.
And off the field things have been
even worse. In 2002, fighting saw 25
fans hospitalised, almost 100 people
arrested and an Independiente
supporter shot dead.
