Today’s pick
Composer of the Week:
Handel and the Crown
Radio 3, noon
It’s hard to think of a more
regal creative figure than
Handel, right, composer
of Zadok the Priest, whose
soaring sound has been
performed at every
coronation since 1727. As part
of its programming marking
the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee,
this week, Donald Macleod
has been exploring Handel’s
relationship with the
monarchy, and how he
helped to forge a new sense
of British culture and identity.
Today’s programme is called
New Broom. The accession of
a new king leads to a key
turning point in Handel’s
relationship with his adopted
country. Ben Dowell
