The Frankie Howerd Show
Radio 4 Extra, 8am
This seven-part series,
repeated for the first time
since its 1974 transmission,
marks just over 30 years
since the death of Frankie
Howerd, right. It tells his life
story with contributions from
his fellow performers
including June Whitfield and
Bob Todd. We begin with him
failing to get into Rada and
entertaining troops during
service in the British Army,
then in 1946 making his radio
debut. The later parts of the

story show him gaining more
recognition in the 1960s when
he participated in Peter
Cook’s Establishment Club in
London and the satirical TV
show That Was the Week That
Was. Ben Dowell
