Synoptic situation
An area of high pressure will
bring a mostly dry and sunny
day across England, Wales
and Ireland. Low pressure
over Scandinavia will push
a slight trough southwards
across the North Sea, leading
to some thicker cloud and the
risk of showers in Scotland
and eastern England. Into next
week low pressure will become
dominant over Britain.

E
ngland and France were
allies against the Dutch
Republic during the Third
Anglo-Dutch War, and 350
years ago the two allies
were preparing to blockade Dutch
shipping in their home ports. The
Royal Navy, commanded by the
Duke of York, was anchored at
Solebay, off Southwold in Suffolk.
The sailors were given shore leave;
the Earl of Sandwich warned that
the fleet was vulnerable to attack
but his fears were dismissed. Then,
on May 28, 1672, a Dutch fleet of 75
ships appeared on the horizon with
an easterly wind in its favour. The
English were in disarray, drunken
sailors were dragged out of taverns
to man their ships and if the wind
held then the Dutch would be able
to launch a devastating attack.
The English struggled to get their
ships out to sea, but at a key
moment the wind eased and gave
time for the Duke of York to restore
order and start sailing north,
although for unknown reasons the
French sailed south, pursued by
about 20 Dutch ships. The main
Dutch force focused its attack on
the English and the battle was
intense. The Earl of Sandwich on
board HMS Royal James came
under ferocious bombardment from
two enemy warships and then three
fireships. Eventually one of the
fireships set the Royal James ablaze
with hundreds of men killed,
including Sandwich himself.
About noon, however, the wind
shifted to more northerly and gave
the English the advantage,
eventually forcing the Dutch to
retreat. The Battle of Solebay had
been hard-fought and ended at
sunset with both sides claiming
victory. Both sides suffered heavy
losses. The English had more than
2,000 men killed, the Dutch about
1,800. Many ships were badly
damaged, the Royal James sank and
one Dutch ship was destroyed and
another captured.
The Dutch had succeeded,
however, in thwarting the Anglo-
French plan to blockade their ports,
while the English claimed they had
repelled what could have been a
disastrous defeat at Solebay.
