Film star John Travolta has donated his Oca-
la, Florida, USA based Boeing 707 to the His-
torical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS)
of Illawarra Regional Airport, Wollongong,
NSW. The aircraft is a Boeing 707-138B regis-
tered N707JT, and adorned on the nose with
‘Jett Clipper Ella’. Flown for many years by
Travolta, it last flew in December 2016, and
needs maintenance to fly again. One of elev-
en delivered to Qantas in 1964, the 707 type
was the first jet aircraft in Qantas’ fleet, re-
placing the Lockheed Constellations. Enter-
ing revenue service as VH-EBM ‘City of
Launceston’, it had only a short career with
Qantas, being retired in April 1968, then fly-
ing with Braniff before passing through a
couple more owners, during which time it
was configured with an executive interior,
before being bought by Travolta in 1998.
Discussions over the donation started
back in 2009 between Travolta and Bob De
La Hunty, President of HARS. Bob com-
mented: “We share a mutual respect for old
airplanes and flying and at that stage we
were keen to suggest to him that if he ever
wanted to part with his Boeing 707 we
would be very interested in it.” This was the
initial step that resulted in Travolta decid-
ing to make the donation after detailed long
term negotiations. At the end of May 2017,
Travolta said: “As many of you will know,
Travolta’s 707 to HARS
flying is a passion of mine and I am just so
grateful to be fortunate enough to count
many hours flying such a beautiful aircraft.”
He added: “HARS have an impressive track
record of restoring historical aircraft and I
have personally flown in a Super Constella-
tion that they restored to flying condition
from almost nothing. I am hoping to be part
of the crew to fly the aircraft to Australia,
supported by well qualified and experi-
enced pilots and engineers.”
Travolta was given special dispensation
by Qantas to have his 707 repainted in the
airline’s full original livery, and he was given
permission to wear a Qantas captain’s uni-
for m as wel l when he qual i fied as an ‘ambas-
sador’ for the airline in 2002. Perhaps the
Boeing’s most unusual use was in January
2010 when Travolta flew the aircraft to Haiti
after the earthquake disaster there, laden
with six tonnes of medical and ready-to-eat
meal relief supplies, as well as Scientologist
‘touch’ healers and his wife Kelly Preston.
Travolta is no stranger to unusual air-
craft. Having qualified as a pilot in 1974, in
1989 bought an ex-RCAF de Havilland Vam-
pire F. Mk.3, N6878D, and operated it until
- Then between 1995 and 2000 he
owned a Canadair CL-41G ‘Tuban’, N401AG,
an ex-Malaysian Air Force ‘Tutor’ type. He
also currently owns a Bombardier Challeng-
er 600. James Kightly
