Connelly’s performance in that film, as Alicia Nash,

wife of the mathematician John Nash (played by

Russell Crowe), who suffered from schizophrenia, won

her the Oscar.

“It was a shift in approach, it happened quite late.

I always sort of think it started happening after Kai was

born. It just changed me profoundly, becoming a parent.

I think it is more about questions of place and home for

me, and freedom — the freedom that is afforded when

one feels safe, grounded and has a place to work from. It

really was a huge turning point in my life.”

Connelly’s relationship with Kai’s father, the

photographer David Dugan, was relatively short-lived.

She met Bettany on the set of 2001’s A Beautiful Mind.
