Schumacher is a
hero and inspiration
WHY SHEFFIELD UNITED?
As you can tell from my
shoulders, I’m a rugby man,
but my friend Martin Green
has a box at Bramall Lane and
he kept inviting me. Since it
involved a meal, I succumbed.
At first it was “silly game,
football”, but it gradually grew
on me. Now I’m hooked.
EARLY MEMORIES
My first three games were 0-0,
but the fanbase kept howling,
which I loved, and the games
got better. The 2014 FA Cup
semi-final defeat against Hull
City, when I lost count of how
many photographs I took after
the first 300, when we were
winning 2-1 at half-time, and
thinking it might happen...
And the 2015 League Cup
semi-final against Tottenham
Hotspur, when only some
Christian Eriksen magic
cost us.
BEST OF TIMES
It might sound odd and I’m
still depressed about it, of
course, but some of last week’s
play-off semi-final second leg
away to Nottingham Forest. At
half-time we’d have settled for
penalties, but when Morgan
Gibbs-White equalised on the
night and John Fleck levelled
us overall, I thought, “Hang
on, this looks like it’s really
going to happen.” In those
moments, football hadn’t got
any better for me. We didn’t go
up, but we went out with fire
and passion.
WORST OF TIMES
Covid stopping everything
during our first Premier
League season [after being
promoted in 2018-19]. No team
suffered more from losing the
fans. We were fifth, a point off
Manchester United. The
bonds are so deep the team
couldn’t react to being without
the fans.
MY FAVOURITE PLAYER
Stefan Scougall. The guy was
from an era when Cloughie Jr
picked small Scottish
midfielders — he gave
everything, and he scored at
Wembley against Hull.
MY MOST FRUSTRATING PLAYER
Rhian Brewster. If only they
could keep his body and pour
in Billy Sharp’s brain, nous,
positioning, confidence and
goalscoring... I still think he
can become the player both
Liverpool and Manchester
United thought he’d be.
HOW CAN UNITED GO UP NEXT
SEASON?
Play youngsters, who we’re
training up to Premier League
level, alongside players in
their prime whose limit is the
Championship, and veterans
to whom we say, “We’ll get the
best out of your last two or
three years and, by the way, we
expect you to pass everything
on to the youngsters.”
CAN YOU KEEP SANDER BERGE?
My heart says yes, my head no.
Unfortunately, the better he
plays, the more people realise
how good he is and the more
likely he is to go. He’s nearly
my height, a sports scientist
told me he covers 12km a
game and he has so much
acceleration. What a player.

MY CLUB
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
I was about seven years old. A
son of family friends raced as
a hobby and one Sunday they
invited us to a local track over
in Holland. I really liked it and
asked my dad if I could have a
go. He said yes and never
stood in my way.
MY BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT
The moment Sir Frank
Williams told me to my face
I was in Formula One. You
don’t really know you’re going
to be in F1 until quite late in
your career. There are no
guarantees. All you can do to
progress is keep winning and
keep impressing people.
THE COACH I LOOKED UP TO
CRG Holland’s Michel Vacirca.
He taught me all the basics
about set-up and physics. He
also gave me the groundwork
for driving, for progressing
and for growing up. He
formed my character and
my competitive spirit. He
challenged me all the time.
MY CHILDHOOD HERO
Michael Schumacher. He was
the German racing hero
and he was my hero.
I raced against him in
F1 for two or three years,
but when I was still
in go-karting and
there was a
Winter
Cup
meeting
close to
his home, he came
along and drove with all the
young racers.
RACING NEVER GOT ANY
BETTER THAN...
At the end of a weekend when
you’ve had a successful race,
when you’ve taken everything
from the table, when you
know you’ve squeezed
everything out of the car and
the team. In my case that
would not be victory because
I didn’t have the car, it would
be a P5, 6, 7 or 8 [finish].
MORNING I HAD THE HANGOVER
TO END ALL HANGOVERS
I have this security thing, so
when things start getting out
of hand, I start eating things
and drinking lots of water.
I hate hangover days.
MY FAVOURITE TRACK
Monaco. There are other
street circuits, but nothing’s
like it. It’s special, there’s a
sensation of having no space,
it’s unbelievably fast and
very challenging.
MY LEAST FAVOURITE TRACK
I never got on with Abu Dhabi.
The track layout never
really clicked with me and
the rhythm was very stop
and go, so I remember
always feeling sick
racing there.
MY TOUGHEST
OPPONENT
Sébastien Buemi,
who also made it to
F1, was my longest-
standing and toughest
rival. As we’re the same
age [33], we were

caramelised onions. I’m not
too sophisticated. I’m a
dessert man who loves
tiramisu, cakes and
chocolate. Coffee to drink,
but in your country it’s not so
easy to get good coffee.
I KNEW THE GAME WAS UP
WHEN...
I’ve been semi-retired since
2020, but I’ve done the odd
race. In F1 it’s not you that
decides. There are only 20
seats [for drivers each
season], a very, very limited
number. If you don’t get a seat
you’re out. It doesn’t mean
that’s what you want, but in
my case it was good timing.
At the end of 2019, I did feel
flat and so a break was a good
thing. I don’t know if I’ll make
it back, but I’m OK with that.
MY ONE REGRET
At the end of 2012 I should not
have moved from Force India
to Sauber. At the time the
Sauber was supposed to be a
killing machine. It turned out
not to be so good. I didn’t see
that coming.
BEST ADVICE FOR A YOUNG
SPORTSPERSON
Don’t take advice from me.
John Aizlewood
Nico Hülkenburg is entering
his own team, 27X, in the new
Eskootr Championship. See
hub.esc.live for information
across Formula Three and
Formula BMW together. We
were always at the same
moment in the same
championship in the same
series, so for a lot of my racing
career I was up against him.
FUNNIEST MOMENT FROM
MY CAREER
We were on the grid in
Bahrain in the days before it
was a night race. It was
roasting hot and the
cloudless sky was blue. I’m
standing by my car, because
it’s too hot to get in. Bernie
Ecclestone walks over, shakes
my hand, looks up and says:
“Hmmm, I don’t think it’s
going to rain today.”
I LEARNT MOST FROM...
Rubens Barrichello. He
was my first F1 team-mate
[at Williams]. He was
experienced, I was a rookie,
but he was incredible in how
he gave feedback about the
car. He played with me when
I thought I had him in my
pocket, but he taught me too.
MY GUILTY PLEASURE
The nutrition people always
think we have to eat healthy,
but I’m a big junk food guy
and I love sweets. I don’t care,
I eat what makes me happy.
MY FAVOURITE MEAL
