Cognitive Approaches to Specialist Languages

230 Chapter Ten

In all radiotelephony situations, the reliable oral discourse consistency
is dependent on the interactants’ ability to operate effectively and safely in
both routine and emergency situations. In the case of inability due to
cognitive dissonance between expected and unexpected messages,
miscommunications of various types occur. Knowledge of the nature of
these miscommunications and the ways of their minimization requires
further studies via analysis of radiotelephony communication discourse.
The discourse approach to the language miscommunication issue
enables us to consider radiotelephony communication as a multifaceted
and multidimensional whole within the contextual discursivity of the
specific aviation communication environment that is radiotelephony
interaction between a pilot and air traffic controller.
