whichreportstotheDirectorofOfficeofOperationsandSupportServicesoverseesspecificpersonnel
functionstoincluderecruitment,trainingandorientation,benefitscoordination,recordsprocessing, payroll,
retirement,andrelatedactivitiesrequiredtomaintainpersonnelservices. Inaddition,theHumanResources
Manageradvisesmanagementonpertinentemploymentissues, providesguidancetoemployeesregarding
departmentalprocedures, andmaintainsoversightoflegalissuesinthelaborandemploymentarea.
PrincipalDuties:TheHumanResourcesManagerprovidesleadershipanddirectioninsupportofagency
mission,goalsandobjectives, complyingwithlegalmandates, andexemplifyingbestpractices. Additionally, the
HumanResourcesManagerisresponsiblefor theday-to-dayoperationsoftheHumanResourcesOfficeand
overseesa teamof10.TheMarylandGeneralAssembly’s pageandinternprogramsthatprovideopportunities
for studentsfromMarylandhighschoolsandcollegestoparticipate intheworkofthelegislature fall under

shouldincludesupervisory and/ormanagementexperienceinoneormore oftheaboveareas. SPHR/PHR
preferred.Availabilitytoworkextendedhours throughouttheLegislative sessionoratotherperiodsasneeded.

You will not be receivingany communicationat your
physicaladdress, and whileyou can includeyour city
if you wouldlike, that is not necessaryeither,
especiallyifthepositionisgoingtobeentirelyor
mostlyremote. Just make sure you haveyour phone
numberand a professionalemailaddress, and you are
goodto go.
Objective
Your objectiveis to get a new job, and the recruiter
alreadyknowsthat.So, removethat objectiveand
replaceit with a high-levelsummaryof your hard
and soft skills. An in-a-nutshellshortparagraph that
describeswho you are and the capabilitiesyou would
bringto the position.It shouldbe the only paragraph
in your resume.
Reallyold jobs
It is morethanlikely that any job you had over 10-
15 yearsago is no longerrelevant. And if thereare
responsibilitiesyouhadthatarestillrelevant,they
will probablybe representedadequatelyin more
recentpositions. It is a straightforward way to keep
everythingcrispand pertinentand removeanything
that is unnecessarilyrepetitive.
Anythingthatis not relevant
This is tied to tailoringyour resumefor eachjob
listing.Lookthroughyour bulletpointsand edit or
removeanythingthat is not importantfor the job you
are applyingto.
Dates
You needto keep workdatesfor, say, the last 10-15
years, but the datesof your graduationand any other
certifications, you can go aheadand remove. Your
qualificationsare whatmatters—notthe date you
earnedyour degree. Whetherit is fair or not, you
want to avoidany unconsciousbias aboutyour age—
whethersomeonewill thinkyou are too youngor old
for a position.
Jargon,acronymsandinitials
We want to haveas muchwhitespaceas possible
on our resumes, but tryingto shortenthingsup by
usingjargon,acronymsand initialsis not the way
to go. Jargonand acronymsare a barrierto clear
communication,and they also vary by company. Avoid
jargonentirely, and if you want to use initialsor
acronyms, spellthemout in theirfirst usage:returnon
investment(ROI).
Anythingthat’s not a fact
Soft skillsare extremelyimportant,but you needto
thinkof a way to conveythemthat is a fact—not
a feeling/opinion.Do not say, “go-getter,” instead,
say somethinglike, “trainingmaterialsdeveloped
whileworkingin my previousrole are still used
for new hires.” Do not say, “warm and friendly,”
say, “developedstrongconnectionswith a key
client,leadingto a $1Mexpansionon our initial
engagement.” Quantifyanythingyou possiblycan,
takingthe guessworkout for the reader.
Fibs
Simplyput, do not lie on your resume. Job postsare
a wishlist—thereis almostno recruiterwho expects
you to haveall the skillsthey list out. Whileyou are
tailoringto the post,make sure you are tellingthe
truth.If you have75 percentof the criteriafor the
position,focuson that.If, onceyou are speakingto
someone, they ask aboutthe other25 percent,be
forthright,and let themknowwhileyou mightnot
haveexperiencein a certainarea,you are a quick
studyand eagerto learn.
Socialmediathat’s not relevantto your
job search
The recruiteris almost definitelygoingto be lookingup
your socialmediaprofiles, and you shouldbe prepared
for that, removingany red flag material.A surveyby The
HarrisPoll found“71 percentof U.S. hiringdecision-
makers agreethat lookingat candidates’ socialmedia
profilesis an effectiveway to screenapplicants.” But
that doesnot meanyou includea link to your Instagram.
Instead,includeone to your (100percentcomplete)
LinkedIn profile, alongwith your portfolio or websiteif
you haveone, and if it’s—youguessedit—relevant.
Writinga resumecan feel overwhelming,but if you
focuson whatto always includeand whatyou can get
rid of, you shouldhave one you feel proudto sendout
whenthat dreamrole comesalong.
